Pam.< I have now reconsidered this question and, having looked at the 1881 census entry, I believe there hs been an error! Not exactly uncommon. I now don't think Joseph was from Yorkshire at all. In 1881 Joseph Merredle is in St Pancras, London, aged 29, and, as you say, his birthplace is shown as "Bradford Milton, York", However, did you notice that he had a sister Rebecca, aged 25, born in Bedford? I believe I found Joseph on the 1861 census, aged 9, with his family - the name seems to be spelt MERIDAL - living at MILTON BRYANT in Bedfordshire. Rebecca is there, too, aged 4. What I suspect happened is that when the enumerator in 1881 asked Joseph where he was born he said "Bedford - Milton" and the London enumerator probably misunderstood his accent and heard it as "Bradford", wrongly assuming Joseph meant Bradford in Yorkshire. Milton Bryan, as it seems to be called today, is near Woburn Abbey, so I think you should be looking in Bedfordshire and not Yorkshire! If you can't get the 1861 image from Ancestry or 1837online, I can send it to you. Such errors in census returns are sent to try us! Another problem solved, I think. -- Roy Stockdill Guild of One-Name Studies: www.one-name.org Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about."
