Hi Valerie The page link I gave you was a list of the ones they have available on-line at present. In order to obtain the relevant unit, you have to input the reference in the search bit. If you follow the link that I have put in below, I have taken you to the point where all you need to do is click on the add search part of the diary you want and then you can it to the shopping basket. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/search-results.asp?searchType=quicksearch&mediaarray=&first_date=&last_date=&CatID=2&pageCount=15&query=wo+95%2F1809&queryType=1&pageNumber=2&sortSpec=Score+desc Like many of the diaries, due to the intense activity, each diary is listed per month, and that is £3.50 each. September 1916 is the one that is the most relevant to you. However, I should warn you that your relation's name is not likely to be mentioned in this unless he was an officer, or performed some valiant act that would lead to a medal. Anybody in the ordinary ranks that are killed in action are listed by the number that died, so it might read someting like KIA 3OR. If you know his period of service, you may want to download each diary month by month, which could then make it more expensive, depending on his length of service. Sometimes, you can find that there are published regimental histories or individual battalion histories, which help you to know which battles he fought in and where. Some are on CD, others you might find in a second hand or specialised bookshop. At Kew, the service records are listed on microfilm. About a third of those from WW1 survive. To see if there are any papers for him you need to either go yourself, or ask a researcher to go and look him up for you. If they do survive, there can be some very interesting information on his medical history, his conduct, previous addresses prior to joining up, any family, where he enlisted and paticulars such as height, weight, chest measurement, colour of eyes etc. WW1 is a study area all in itself and quite fascinating to those of us who had ancestors out in Flanders or Gallipoli giving their all for their country. Best Wishes Ellen Valerie Gilbert <[email protected]> wrote: Hello Ellen and thanks for your help. I was eventually able to see a mention of the document you mention.
