Hi Valerie Yes, I think there is every possibility that Dennis could have become Michael Dennis if everything else seems to (roughly) check out. You ask if anyone else had come across anything similar and I have encountered a similar puzzle recently. My great-grandmother's sister had a daughter who was shown as Dorothy on Census Returns, at the time of her marriage, etc. but I was unable to find her birth. However, I found a christening record for her two years after her birth in the name of Dorothy Eliza, which lead me to her birth certificate in the name of Eliza. Eliza was the name of her paternal grandmother, so she was probably named after her initially, but then the name of Dorothy was added and, as far as I can ascertain, she was only ever know as Dorothy afterwards, with no mention of the name Eliza. I am sure that this family (especially with all the variations of surname they used as well), like so many others, were intent on leading their descendants a merry chase a hundred years later. Happy hunting. Hi Valerie, I too have found a family where there was a christening and cert. for James, but no further trace of him. Two of us were working on the family together and we both came to the same conclusion independently (our letters crossed in the post) that the Samuel we thought must be a member of the family was in fact James. Everything fitted, no birth for Samuel, the right age on the census returns, the right family names, living in the right area, occupation etc. We eventually found signatures for two other members of the family, both had signed with a middle initial, yet according to all the records we found they both only had one name. Quite possibly all the family had two names, but just didn't use them on official documents, and for some reason James/Samuel changed which one he used. We will never be able to prove it of course!
