Hi My understanding is that Civil Registration was the responsibility of the Registrar until 1875 - he or she had to go out and collect info on births, marriages and deaths in their area, rather than the individual having to report the event, and that this procedure led to some registrations being later than the optimum. I've been told that a Death Reg was required for a burial to take place, unless the minister knew the family involved, and there was no hint of any problem with the death.... Among my ancestors, I certainly have one Death Registration three quarters after the actual burial was noted in the parish registers..... Hope this helps Geoff in Sevilla ____________Still climbing trees after all these years!> From: yzzil.yrruc@virgin.net> To: eng-yks-bradford@rootsweb.com> Date: Wed, 14 Nov 2007 22:06:38 +0000> Subject: Re: [YKS-BRADFORD] ENG-YKS-BRADFORD Digest, Vol 2, Issue 256> > I should have said the 1857 registrations were both in the Jul-Sept quarter, > I know little about this in the 1850s, but wouldn't the registrations have > to take place within a certain length of time?> > Liz> > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Stephanie Lever" <salever1@rogers.com>> To: <eng-yks-bradford@rootsweb.com>> Sent: Wednesday, November 14, 2007 8:34 PM> Subject: Re: [YKS-BRADFORD] ENG-YKS-BRADFORD Digest, Vol 2, Issue 256> > > > Re the Death Index and William Whyte Query. Thanks Geoff, I now have this picture in my mind of a little man scurrying around with a bundle of papers from house to house lol. It must have been a full time job when Bradford began to expand so rapidly and with the influx of people from places such as Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. I presume this was necessary as many people could not read or write then. The different accents must have made transcribing what was said very difficult, no wonder there are so many discrepancies in spellings of names and places.
