Re the Death Index and William Whyte Query. Bear in mind that the GRO index is an index of the death REGISTRATIONS. While he may have died in 1856, perhaps his death wasn't registered until 1857. I should have said the 1857 registrations were both in the Jul-Sept quarter, I know little about this in the 1850s, but wouldn't the registrations have to take place within a certain length of time?
