Hi Janet, my father's mother was from the Sykes family and we have traced them back to Joshua Sykes who was born in Pudsey in 1805. His father was Thomas Sykes but I don't know where he was born in 1805. I would be interested to know more/help with your friend's searches. In the course of my own investigations I have come across a number of Sykes people, many of whom didn't prove to be related but I could contact them again with your request.
