My dad was a minister and had to produce a regular 3 monthly "plan" of services. When he could not cover a service, he would print the word "Supply" to indicate that, at the time of printing, the particular service had yet to have someone to conduct it, but that it would be "supplied" in time. Quite often, theological students would "supply" the vacancy.An old story is that one parishioner expressed frustration that she had never met Mr Supply, that someone else always turned up when he was set down to conduct a service.
