May I respectfully explain why, in the hope that you will see my reasoning? FARRER and its principal associated variant FARRAR are relatively common surnames in West Yorkshire and particularly in Bradford. By no means all Farrers and Farrars will be related to one another. Some figures from the CD-ROM software Surname Atlas (which produces instant distribution maps from the 1881 census data) graphically illustrate the case. In 1881 there were a total of 5,983 entries in the UK census for the two surnames (and there were more than 30 other variants that I have not incorporated). Of these, 3,128 were living in the West Riding of Yorkshire, a figure of just over 52 per cent, slightly more than half the total for the whole country. The next highest number were in Lancashire, 1,099. Thus, there were three times as many Farrers and Farrars in the W Riding as in any other county, and I haven't included the East and North Ridings. Of these, 641 were in the Poor Law Union of Bradford, the only greater number being in Halifax, with 836. I trust my point is made! Thus, when posting a query for such a fairly common name, you should try and be SPECIFIC. Say which Farrer family you are talking about, not just "Farrer/Horsforth and Bradford area". Give a few names, possible addresses and dates, albeit briefly. Also say what you have already done and what you know. This prevents other posters who may have Farrer/Farrar connections from posting vague response in the possible hope they may be connected to you, and wasting bandwidth. 3. Roy, What is this bandwidth I wasted responding to Maureen? Should I be checking on it before I choose to respond to queries? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Roy Stockdill" <roy.stockdill@btinternet.com> To: <eng-yks-bradford@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, March 11, 2008 8:36 AM Subject: Re: [YKS-BRADFORD] FARRER >> maureen farrer wrote: >> >> >Hi, >> >I am researching >> >FARRER/Horsforth and Bradford areas. >> >Thanks, >> >Maureen> > > > I hope you will forgive me, Maureen, if I point out that this is a classic > example of how not to post a query.
