    3. Gavin, can't help with the westbourne Green but just today I have got a copy of a marriage certificate of the second marriage of my great grandfather and he married and Agnes Firth details are 3rd Janaury 1910 at St Stephen's Church West Bowling. Samuel Stocks 46 widower of 121 Newton Street s.o. John Stocks, & Agnes Firth 48, widow, of 423 Bowling Old Lane d.o. James Hill deceased. I know nothing about her, except that she came with a son called Charlie Firth, who was a witness on my grandfather's wedding certificate. 1. [YKS-BRADFORD] Metcalfe Surname in Bradford
    2. Susanne & John Metcalfe
    3. I have been working on a study of the Metcalfe [any spelling] surname in Bradford, Yks between 1841 & 1901. To date, I have approx. 4400 individuals in the GEDCOM file. At present I have only isolated about 50% of the 750 plus marriages in the partial index. The difficulty in allocating the marriages is mainly with the females. If you have a transcription of a marriage, birth or death which took place in Bradford for the Metcalfe name, I would like to have a copy of the transcription. It would help to verify the linkages made, etc. I would like to hear from anyone with Bradford connections. Susanne

    3. Hi Judith, As well as looking for a picture of Otley Rd Chapel I was also looking for articles re the death of my great grandfather who was knocked down by a car on Tollers Lane in Bradford in 1932. As you recommended I asked the local studies department if they could find articles re both the chapel and the accident and they found articles on each and the notification of death in the Bradford Argos. The only thing they couldn't find was an account of what happened in the coroners court - there were reports from the coroners court but they couldn't find my great grandfather. I was amazed all it cost was £1.35p. So maybe you would get what you need through them. Liz

    1. [YKS-BRADFORD] descendants of Joseph Sunderland and Ann Stansfield and other family mysteries
    2. Hello Jan in Bronte Country and Geoff in Sevilla Jan - The Keighley forum sounds like a good idea - thank you. I will send you scans of the photos off-list - I'm still getting used to a new scanner with less than 100% success so far with photographs. The Sunderland family was in Bingley from all accounts that I know of - up to the 1960s when we lost track of them on the death of my grandmother here in Canada. She corresponded regularly with Annie and Ruth. James Sunderland and Frances Core married in Calverly and I believe various family members married and/or lived in nearby communities. My Yorkshire geography is sadly lacking I'm afraid. Geoff - Sadly I know nothing of Ann Stansfield other than what I put in the email. I have just found the probable marriage of Joseph Sunderland and Ann Stansfield registered in 1849 in the FreeBMD index and will order a copy of the marriage certificate. Once that arrives perhaps we may find a connection. I have a few other family mysteries involving the Core and Holdsworth families, and a mysterious Harry Raistrick from Bradford who married Frances Core Sunderland (widow) shortly after her arrival in Canada. He then seemed to just disappear - no divorce, no death certificate, no presence in the Ottawa city directory. But up to this point I have not verified enough information to provide anyone else with a basis for further searching or connecting with their own families. Frances later married (no certificate found yet) Alfred Burwell Crawford, born in Canada but of English parents - from an unknown location. Thank you for your interest. I'll continue to watch the list and will add any new information I can find. Ann in Ottawa ===================== From: "Jan Perkins" <janperkins@blueyonder.co.uk> Hi Ann Wonder if it is any use me trying the Keighley History forum for you...................................certainly Gilstead Lane, sounds like a Bingley address. 3. Ann An interesting email - and your STANSFIELD connection caught my eye...... A certain George STANSFIELD married one of my wife's indirect ancestors, Mary HOWKER, on 30 August 1792 in Haworth, which is within a few miles of Bingley, which in turn contains an area known as Gilstead, and Halifax (see later) is a few miles in the other direction...... Mary already had an illegitimmate son Robert born in c1788, and then George and Mary had four more known children - Sally / Sarah (b1793), Joseph (b1796), Nelly (b1798) and Susannah (b1800). We have done a bit of research on Sally / Sarah, who married a William RATCLIFFE and they had thirteen known children, but we have not traced any of the other three beyond their baptisms, which were all in Haworth - although to be honest we have not tried too hard because the family was increasingly indirect to our main interests. Perhaps one of these three was a parent of Ann Stansfield? I note your comment that she was born in Coldedge, Yorkshire but can't find this place on either Genuki or Multimap, although Google shows links to Luddenden, near Halifax, so perhaps not too far away...... If you have any info on the parents of your Ann Stansfield, perhaps it might be worthwhile us jointly researching a bit further? They had four children: Mary E b. 1883; Lucy b. 1885; Stansfield b. 1889 d. 1893; and Joseph b. 1891. To date I have not confirmed any information later than the 1901 census for this family. In 1901 they lived at 37 Wingfield Mount. William may have married Mary Barber (still uncertain this is the right William) - and they had children Joseph b. 1887, and John and Grace both b. 1890. However, I'm still unable to absolutely connect them as I have not seen the marriage certificate to verify that this is the right couple. They lived on Maperton (?) road in 1901. There was a Rachel Sunderland who married Thomas Davison Cummins in 1876 - and the ages fit in census of 1891 - but no other reason to simply accept this as the correct Rachel and family. All whose names I know would have certainly died by now so I don't know what names to even look for today. I have access to ancestry.com but all roads lead to confusion past 1901. In fact, there may be nobody left in Yorkshire but I have no information to suggest where else to look from where I sit here in Canada. I don't know the churches they would have attended - I believe they were Baptists but not regualr church goers according to family lore. The IGI has not provided anything more definitive. I would appreciate any suggestions as to where I should search from here. I'm quite willing to purchase certificates from the GRO if I can be reasonably certain it's the right family but at 7 GBP each it's a bit expensive to stab in the dark. Thank you. 1. [YKS-BRADFORD] seeking living descendants of Joseph Sunderland and Ann Stansfield
    2. Ann Burns
    3. Hello I am in Ottawa ON Canada and planning a trip to England next Spring. If at all possible I would like to contact any living descendants of my gg grandparents: Joseph and Ann (Stansfield) Sunderland. Most of the family worked in the textile industry in the 19th century - not exactly a unique occupation. Joseph Sunderland was born about 1828 in Halifax, Yorkshire and died in Sept 1904 in Bradford. I believe his mother's name was Rachel but have no proof at this time. Ann Stansfield was born in 1828 in Coldedge, Yorkshire and died sometime between 1861 and 1868, probably in Bradford as the family continued to live there. Joseph married Faith Robertshaw in 1869 but they had no children. The children of Joseph and Ann were: Thomas b. 1850 in Halifax; the remaining children were born in Bradford: Rachel b. 1853; James b. 1855; John b. 1858, Stansfield b. 1859; and William b. 1864. In 1901 Joseph and Faith lived at 37 Mildred St. James is my great-grandfather. He married Frances Core (parents Wm Core and Ann/Nanny Holdsworth) in 1878 and I have that Sunderland line complete to the present day - all in Canada and the US. James died in 1888 and Frances emigrated to Ottawa, ON Canada with the children in 1889. Tracing the family of Frances Core in Yorkshire is a matter for another day. John married Clara Sykes in 1881 and they had six children that I know of: William, Harold, Ann, Edith, Ruth, and John Jr. Ann and Ruth never married. Edith married ? Whitwham; Harold died in 1909. It is particularly the families of John Jr. and William that I may have the best luck in trying to trace. Ann, Ruth and Edith were living in Bingley until at least the 1960s but we lost track of them when my grandmother died in 1969. They have all passed away but I'm not certain when. 3. Hi Judith, Thanks for that. I have used the library archives for information but never thought of them for photographs. Sometimes I think my brain went into retirement when I did! Liz

    3. Hi Liz Your best bet is to try Bradford Central Library Local Studies Dept. If you go to:- www.bradford.gov.uk and click on Contact us you will find there is an online form where you can contact the local studies directly. They are most helpful, I have had lots of help and photos from them and I think that the most I have paid has been £1.20 to cover copying and p&p. Good luck Judith K Liz Holdsworth <yzzil.yrruc@virgin.net> wrote: Please does anyone have a picture of Otley Road Chapel on St Augustines Terrace Bradford or know a site where I can find one? I have googled it and tried the following 2 sites http://www.churches-uk-ireland.org/ amd http://www.geograph.org.uk/ with no luck.
