Am busy trying to corral all of those elusive ancestors..and have this sofar..My g.grandfather was Eli Walter Swaine who was the son of Thomas Swaine of Horton (he died 1855)..who was the son of Richard and Ruth Swaine..and he was the son of John Swaine..and he was the son of James Swaine.. Okay..now does anyone have any of these people in their lines? I am hoping that some kind soul has found the magic link that will help me sort out all of these Swaines that were in and around Horton in the 1600s-1800s..My research thus far has led me in circles with these people..I know that all of these Swaine's eventually are related at some point but am sure frustrated in finding the right ones with the right families.. Some of them were members of the Chapel Lane Parish Church..Independent ..and some from Wibsey..and some from Manningham..along with Horton. Great Horton and Little Horton were the main areas that they lived..Thomas Swaine owned an inn in a couple of places..His great Uncle Gilbert Swaine also owned an inn called the George and Dragon..when he was alive.. Hope to find someone else who is researching the same family lines.. Thanks all.. C.Olsen in Alaska.. **************It's Tax Time! Get tips, forms, and advice on AOL Money & Finance. Hi there, I can't help much with the Swaine line however, Eli Walter's mum is my line. She was Maria Hudson the daughter of Thomas and Martha Hudson nee Wright. Martha was the sister of my gt gt gt grandfather John Wright born 1782. If you need any help with that line let me know. Hi Everyone A lot of you have probably heard about the event that we have held every 2 years in York since 2000. This year it is named Yorksgen 2008 and it is from Saturday July 5 to Saturday July 19th. You can come for one week or for both weeks. It is a chance for people from all over the world who have an interest in researching their family tree to visit the land where their ancestors came from. We have people coming from Australia, New Zealand, Portugal, Germany, Canada, USA, Scotland and England. This is not part of a commercial event, its just some ordinary people trying to put this together and not for a profit. We stay in student houses near York University. A short bus ride into York. Within walking distance to Borthwick where a lot of the records are held. Each house has 10 single bedrooms, each with bed, wardrobe, desk, sink. Shared facilities include a large well equipped kitchen where we often get together for a lot of fun times. Coin laundry within a couple minutes walk. Store nearby. Charles X11 Pub nearby which is a great spot to get together for a meal, a drink, and social gathering. There is no set program that anyone has to follow. Use the facilities to sleep and do your own thing. Go to the different Archives within Yorkshire. There is a program that has been set but it is up to each individual if they want to participate in any, part, or all of it. The program includes talks, walks, trips and tours and is again based on the cost. Take a look at www.yorksgen.com and follow the links for this event. Don't worry if you are solo as many of the attendees are solo. Don't worry about your age. My mother-in-law Dorothy is coming for the 5th time and she is 83 years old. Don't worry if you don't know anyone. There are lots of new people that come each time and everyone is made to feel welcome and does feel welcome. The cost for accommodation is 90 pounds per week, a price you cannot beat. If you have an interest or would like more information about this event, please contact me offlist. Janet Lovegrove

Hello Rob I am very grateful to you for this information on Caroline Hawcroft (or Hawcroft) I have spent quite a long time in trying to find this information and you have filled in quite a few blanks for me. It is quite surprising to find all these variations in spellings, but we do have to make allowances for educational standards (or lack of them) in that day and age. Once again, many thanks Keith
Keith, Caroline's maiden name was Secker. She married John Hawcroft (note the spelling) in Barnsley in 1873 (March qtr 1873, Barnsley, Vol 9c page 186). John died in Wortley district in 1879, aged 29. I wondered why I couldn't find the birth of Caroline's daughters Hannah, Harriet and Elizabeth in FreeBMD using the surname Howcroft. Knowing that they had been born in Kexbrough, I looked at Harriets born in Wortley registration district in 1873 and 1874, and the name Hawcroft leaped off the page. From that point on, it was fairly simple to find the marriage entry for John Hawcroft, with Caroline Secker on the same index page. In 1861, Caroline can be found in the household of Francis Sacker (note the spelling), being his granddaughter. There's no indication as to who her parents are; there are three granddaughters in the household: Caroline, aged 6, Eliza, aged 1, and Polly [Mary], a newborn. There are also two daughters present, Elizabeth, aged 24, and Jane, aged 22. In 1871 Caroline is a domestic servant in some other household, and Eliza and Mary are still with their grandfather. I am very grateful for > the > information.> With the greatest respect, Keith, and I mean this as kindly as possible, if you didn't know that a birth certificate always contains the mother's maiden name, you really ought to treat yourself to a decent book on genealogy and family history, otherwise you will struggle to proceed much further! This is absolutely the most basic information and I suggest it would benefit you to do a little homework. You cannot learn everything about genealogy by asking very basic and fundamental questions in a group like this. You need to take notice of the experts. The best book is widely acknowledged to be Ancestral Trails by Mark Herber. Yes Keith it would be most likely that both earlier names would be on the marriage cert. Also of course getting the birth cert of a daughter of the first marriage would give the mother's maiden name. Subject: [YKS-BRADFORD] Ramsdens in Bradford Hello Listers I have been trying to find the maiden name of Caroline Howcroft who was a widow when she married Alfred A(u)gustus Ramsden in 3/1890 Bradford (Vol. 9b, Page 376); she apparently originated from Knaresborough. They lived at 98 St Leonard's Road, Bradford in the 1901 Census. In the 1881 Census, she was living at 5 Back Girlington Road, along with her three daughters, two of whom went to live at her new marital home. In the 1881 Census she is shown as a widow from a place which could be taken for an abbreviation of Knaresborough. Would anybody know that if I obtained a copy of the marriage certificate for Alfred A(u)gustus Ramsden and Caroline, would this indicate her maiden name? The reason for the brackets round the 'u' is that apparently he was originally christened Agustus, but this seems to have changed as the years have passed. In fact he had a son in 1880 from his first marriage, named Alfred Augustus Ramsden. I would appreciate any useful information Kindest regards Keith ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to ENG-YKS-BRADFORD-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

Somewhere along the line I think we must be 10th cousins 20 times removed or something like that <vbg> I am not researching the FEARNLEY's as the only one I have is William who married Mary Helena HUSTLER but I am researching the HUSTLER's. My mother was one before marriage - name not profession!! I have only got back to my 4x gt grandfather - Thomas HUSTLER who married Betty LAYCOCK in 1799. I think Betty was his second wife. Hello Listers Many thanks to Nancie and to Gilbert.Valerie for their rapid responses to my queries. Not having had any children of my own, I was unaware that the maiden name would be on a child's birth certificate. I am very grateful for the information. Kindest regards Keith
Hello Listers I have been trying to find the maiden name of Caroline Howcroft who was a widow when she married Alfred A(u)gustus Ramsden in 3/1890 Bradford (Vol. I would appreciate any useful information Kindest regards Keith
