    3. I had a very successful research session in Bradford Archives last week. By chance they have an interesting display of items connected with Brown, Muff and Co. As it happened I was searching for the site of the Yorkshire Bank Tyrrel St in 1880's .My CREEDON ancestor was caretaker there with a large family in tow. After leaving the archive a wander through Tyrrel Street actually did help locate the building as it was adjoining the Brown, Muff and Co store . This was the same block that had on a diagonal corner , high up in the original stonework company name Brown & Muff 1870. That part of the building was warehouse I believe.I was so busy checking the high up stone front I forgot to note the name of the modern store below. I recall ZA.. maybe Zahti or similar, maybe a record store or similar. Is anyone a local Bradford resident able to give me the store name. ? On the corner Tyrrel St , Bank St. I am also hoping there may be a way of tracing a photo of the front of the bank building which by 1901 had become the London, City and Midland Bank. For locals the display in the Library local studies dept is very interesting about the well remembered business Brown, Muff and Co. Valerie nee Creedon

    3. Hello, Any chance that he could have been a 'dyer`? There were a lot of people working in the textile dyeing industry and until a few years ago, there was a very visible 'slubbing dyers and melange printers` lettering on a factory close to North Bridge. best wishes George George --------------------------------- Sent from Yahoo! 3. Hi All He could actually be a diver i.e. entertainer. During my research of the Beaumont's, I came across a Beaumont diver at Llandudno(about 1890's/1900's born Blackpool), who use to dive from pier to entertain the crowds. On one occasion he dived from the pier to rescue someone in trouble in the water. There is a plaque on the pier to commemorate this occasion Regards Lenny

In the 19th century a considerable number of reservoirs were constructed on the moors high above towns like Bradford and Halifax to serve those places. Look at any map of the area particularly around Halifax and further west into the Dales and you will see many reservoirs. You can get an excellent "feel" for them with Google Earth. Look particularly above Hebden Bridge, in the Calder Valley west of Halifax, and towards Haworth. You will see numerous reservoirs and lakes up on the moors. -- Roy Stockdill Professional genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." 3. Norman All I can say is that my father worked as a GP in Bradford in the 1960s. At one point I had to take a phone message for him. It was a man who suspected that his workmate had a case of the bends, so they must have been operating in some sort of diving environment in the Bradford area. I can only think that it was something to do with sewers or reservoirs. All these were found in reports in the Leeds Mercury. Not exactly world-shattering, but all wonderful stuff for what we call "putting flesh on the bones" of family history! One of the lectures I give is about researching from newspapers and I am always preaching the ethos that it is a wonderful way of finding out those titbits about your ancestors that you would never know otherwise. This trial of the British Newspaper Library holdings is an outstanding chance, for as long as it lasts, to add colour to your family history research. -- Roy Stockdill Professional genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." 3. The most likely "Roman Catholic Chapel Bradford" would be St Mary's Stott Hill. Although often called Chapel it was a fairly large Church near the Cathedral. It has closed very recently this year. I think St Patrick's was likely to have been called a Church.
