    1. [YKS-BRADFORD] Help request re: book with old photo of Wardle's Tinsmith Business in Bradford
    2. Sharon Harrington
    3. I live in the United States and do not have easy access to the Bradford Archives. . Roy Stockdill's message to Valerie about old photos of Bradford prompted me to send the following message to the list. In the 1960's-1970's, a relative from Yorkshire, visiting my WARDLE grandparents in Philadelphia, PA, brought them a book from England that I believed showed pictures of "old Yorkshire" or "old Bradford." The book disappeared after the deaths of my grandparents. In the book, was a black and white photo of a business storefront with the name of "WARDLE" on the window. I believe the photo is probably from the late 1800's or very early 1900's. The business was for that a tinsmith or something similar and there were a number of metal pots in the window of the store. (I seem to recall a large cauldron type pot in the center of the window.) Many of my grandfather's WARDLE ancestors were tinners, tin smiths, and sheet metal workers by trade. Some owned their own business in Horton, Great Horton, and/or Bradford. I was wondering if anyone might have a book with such a photograph in it? If so, I would love to have a copy of the photo and/or also know the title and publishing information of the book so that I might obtain a copy of the book. Thank you in advance for any help given. 2. Janet Lovegrove
    3. Hi Everyone Just reposting some of the info that I sent a few weeks back. Just to let you know that there is still some accommodation available for either of the weeks mentioned. Please let us know ASAP if you may be interested in attending any part of our event or if you would like additional info. A lot of you have probably heard about the event that we have held every 2 years in York since 2000. This year it is named Yorksgen 2008 and it is from Saturday July 5 to Saturday July 19th. You can come for one week or for both weeks. It is a chance for people from all over the world who have an interest in researching their family tree to visit the land where their ancestors came from. We have people coming from Australia, New Zealand, Portugal, Germany, Canada, USA, Scotland and England. This is not part of a commercial event, its just some ordinary people trying to put this together and not for a profit. We stay in student houses near York University. A short bus ride into York. Within walking distance to Borthwick where a lot of the records are held. Each house has 10 single bedrooms, each with bed, wardrobe, desk, sink. Shared facilities include a large well equipped kitchen where we often get together for a lot of fun times. Coin laundry within a couple minutes walk. Store nearby. Charles X11 Pub nearby which is a great spot to get together for a meal, a drink, and social gathering. There is no set program that anyone has to follow. Use the facilities to sleep and do your own thing. Go to the different Archives within Yorkshire. There is a program that has been set but it is up to each individual if they want to participate in any, part, or all of it. The program includes talks, walks, trips and tours and is again based on the cost. Take a look at www.yorksgen.com and follow the links for this event. Don't worry if you are solo as many of the attendees are solo. Don't worry about your age. My mother-in-law Dorothy is coming for the 5th time and she is 83 years old. Don't worry if you don't know anyone. There are lots of new people that come each time and everyone is made to feel welcome and does feel welcome. The cost for accommodation is 90 pounds per week, a price you cannot beat. If you have an interest or would like more information about this event, please contact me offlist. Janet Lovegrove

Janet Hello Scholemoor does not have an email address and even if they did would charge you around £30 - £50GBP for doing a look up. However, the burials at this cemetery have been digitised by them but are not surname indexed. There is now a copy of the digitisation in the local studies dept at Bradford Library and if you were to contact them with the exact date of death I am fairly certain that they would look it up for you. A long protracted search would cost you though. I have had other things looked up for me there and it has only cost me the printing and postage. I paid well under £2GBP for an obituary which is extremely reasonable. You would have to contact the library re the burials because, as I say, they are not surname indexed so may take longer to find. The last time I went to Scholemoor they had just had the digitisation done and it took longer using the CD's than hefting around the burial tomes. Never mind! I have a half dozen books of old Bradford containing several photos of Tyrrel Street, including one taken in 1891 looking towards Bank Street and Hustlergate. It shows Brown & Muff and a bank called what was then the Bradford Commercial Bank. Might that be the one? I will scan and e-mail one or two pics to you, but you may have to give me a few days, since I am currently a bit up to my ears in work and visiting my wife, who is in hospital for an operation. I did ask in the Archives and they were very helpful and did supply quite a number of Tyrrel St old photos. It was one of these I used to verify the plot. They found a sewer map too which named/ marked the Yorkshire bank as the corner plot. Only after I left the Archives , searched the street and left the area did I wonder if there might be a Bank street photo as well, showing the front or other side . Yes please, scan any possible picture when you have the chance. I hope the operation goes well for your wife. 3. I'll be anxious to see if you get an answer as my relies are buried there. I wrote the cemetery 3 years ago asking for some information and they never answered. I found out later that they don't respond to letters. Diane in California

    3. I had a very successful research session in Bradford Archives last week. By chance they have an interesting display of items connected with Brown, Muff and Co. As it happened I was searching for the site of the Yorkshire Bank Tyrrel St in 1880's .My CREEDON ancestor was caretaker there with a large family in tow. After leaving the archive a wander through Tyrrel Street actually did help locate the building as it was adjoining the Brown, Muff and Co store . This was the same block that had on a diagonal corner , high up in the original stonework company name Brown & Muff 1870. That part of the building was warehouse I believe.I was so busy checking the high up stone front I forgot to note the name of the modern store below. I recall ZA.. maybe Zahti or similar, maybe a record store or similar. Is anyone a local Bradford resident able to give me the store name. ? On the corner Tyrrel St , Bank St. I am also hoping there may be a way of tracing a photo of the front of the bank building which by 1901 had become the London, City and Midland Bank. For locals the display in the Library local studies dept is very interesting about the well remembered business Brown, Muff and Co. Valerie nee Creedon
