    1. Re: [ BRAD] 1841 and 1851 census Bradford - Vicar Lane
    2. Colin Spiller
    3. Vicar Lane still exists. It crosses Leeds Road near to Eatbrook Well roundabout. On ome side, it is part of Little Germany, and on the other is now fairly modern office buiildings and a car park. It's close to where Exchange Station (hope that's right) was before it was knocked down and became the transport interchange. I have bought the West Riding 1841 census CDs but struggle with them and have no success on this search. some images are illegible , I don't seem to be able to work out the index either. So I'm begging for help. I have a William MALTBY and Mary Ann his wife, possibly two or more children living in Vicar Lane Bradford in 1840. I've worked out that Vicar lane is probably East End and the Brad.Fam.Hist.Soc. index does have a MALTBY in that area 1841. 3. Valerie, I can't help with the Cds, but I will be in Bradford Central Library at the beginning of April and can check the 1851 index for you. Let me know if you want me to do that. Also, regarding the CD, how are the entries indexed? Does it use the micro fische indexes? The reason I ask is that, to the best of my knowledge, there are surname indexes for a lot of the census's (what's the plural for that then?....I feel an intercept from Roy heading my way) in Bradford Central Library and if there's one for 1841 it might help you as it cross references the names to the fische indexes. 3. Dear Listers, Thanks to Judith Kettlewell's advice, my mystery address of 'Telsbridge' Lane has turned into Silsbridge Lane (hand-written), now re-named Grattan Road and right in the middle of Bradford, near Westgate. Well I'm 99% sure about that - it would clinch it once and for all if someone could pin-point Middleton Field for me. I have seen the name used (in the address on a Nonagenarian's list!) so it *did* exist - but where? I'd be just delighted if someone recognised it. Regards, Knola Jeffery in New Zealand.

Wyke is a township in Birstall parish. However, there is an Anglican church at Wyke, St Mary's, built 1847. According to the NIPR for the West Riding it became a separate parish in 1844 and registers from that date are at the West Yorkhire Archives, Bradford branch in Canal Rd. 3. [From a book by James Parker of districts round Bradford,1902] This old landmark is situated at Whitfield Hill, and was built by Dr.SUGDEN,IN 1789,who owned the estate around there, including Whitfield House. In 1822 it was occupied by Robert WOODHEAD as miller,in 1837 by John MITCHELL,and for a period of several years it fell into disuse and went to ruin nearly, and Francis Sharp BRIDGE,of Horton Old Hall, became the owner of it. In 1852 Benjamin BARRACLOUGH took it,then his son,William BARRACLOUGH, followed his father, now Benjamin BARRACLOUGH,grandson to the above, has been miller there for 16 years [1902] ======================================= I remember what remained of the mill when I lived in Shelf as a child, but what there is now I couldn't say. Hello Cousin Tana, Nice to hear from you.I'm sorry but the extract I posted was complete, there were no dates given for John Pilling. He must have been there after 1855.The census for 1861 or 1871 might record him being there, but it's 'sod's law'that he ws probably in between !!! I don't know if Trade Directories have a section for 'Pub' landlords or not. Knowing what kind & learned folk Bradford Listers are, someone might know the answer. Sorry I can't be more helpful. 3. [Taken from a book by James Parker about Bradford districts,1902] 1)Crown Hotel. This well-known Hotel stands at the junction of Storr Hill Road and New Road Side.It was built during the years 1865-6,by Joseph BARRACLOUGH,father of Mr.Gaythorne BARRACLOUGH of Wike,Wm.HANSON being Architect.A beer license was obtained for it in 1866,and in 1867 a full license was granted. 2)The Old Red Lion Inn. This old hostel used to be in the block of buildings next to the Lower Manor House in Wike Lane, and when the Huddersfield Road was made the license was transferred to the present house,at the junction of the Whitehall and Huddersfield Road in 1822.It was kept by Anthony COLLINS. 3)The Furnace Inn. This old inn once existed near to the entrance of Town Gate,Wike, and near to what was called the 'Bowling Green'In the year 1822 it was kept by Samuel BIRKBY,butcher, and in the year 1830 it was occupied by Richard and Mary BIRKBY. It was a one storied building, and was pulled down many long years ago. ======================================= Not many people mentioned this time, but I hope some Listers can lay claim to them.
