    3. I have just received the Marriage Certificate [after many years of searching] for my 2xgt grandparents. If anyone is going to Bradford Library could I please ask for a look up on the 1851 Census cards. I will be forever grateful. I only have names as the address on the marriage certificate [1852] just said Bradford. The names are:- James HAINSWORTH who should - hopefully - be living with his father William HAINSWORTH & family. James would be about 27 years. James was a comber - William was a labourer. Hannah WATMOUGH/Watmuff daughter of Joshua WATMOUGH/WATMUFF, she would be about 22 years. As Hannah was a servant she may not be with her family. Joshua was a comber. Any help much appreciated. Thank you. Kind regards Judith Kettlewell

    3. __________ (derek deShelfe sent on 26 Mar 2003) [For Murray Mitchell in Canada, but please read, you might be able to help him too] Hi Murray, I looked for George in the East End first, but he wasn't there. So,as I'd found Elizabeth in the West End,I thought I'd try that,and----Bingo !! 1841 Census Bradford,West End Black Abbey Joel RILEY,aged 45,Comber Hannah RILEY,aged 45. Joseph RILEY,aged 15, George RILEY,aged 15.Coal Miner Mary RILEY,aged 10,Spinner John CLEGG,aged 10,Comber. [All born in Yorkshire] This George was the only one in both West & East Ends of the right age to be your George. You'll no doubt know that ages in 1841 were rounded down to the nearest number ending in 0 or 5.Joseph might well have been as old as 19. I had a look at the IGI for Yorkshire, and found these entries, which might or might not be yours---- Joel RILEY married Hannah PENNY,2nd.Jan. 1818,Bradford. Joel RILEY bapt.29th.April 1792,son of George & Sarah RILEY,Thornton by Bradford. George RILEY married Sarah BENTLEY, 8th.March 1789,Bradford. George RILEY bapt.1st.Feb,1764,Bradford son of Joshua RILEY I expect you know that the IGI is not always to be trusted as regards accuracy All the above entries really need to be checked at their original source. Next time I go to the library would you like me to look for George & Elizabeth on the 1861 census ? Cheers----Derek.

    1. [ BRAD] 1841 Census,Bradford--Elizabeth AGLEY
    2. derek deShelfe
    3. [For Murray Mitchell (Canada),but please read this, you might be able to help him] Hi Murray, For census purposes the densely populated centre of Bradford was split into 2 districts--East End & West End. Bradford Moor is in the East End,but the surname index for 1841 showed no entry for AGLEY at all.So I looked at the index for West End and found just 1 entry for AGLEY. I found the entry on the microfilm, and think this is your Elizabeth----- 1841 Census Bradford,West End. Providence Street John MADEN,aged 30,Woolcomber. Henrietta MADEN,aged 40. Joshua MADEN,aged 25,Woolcomber. James AGLEY,aged 15,Woolcomber. Elizabeth AGLEY,aged 12. [All born in Yorkshire] As you know the 1841 census is very poor on detail, and the ages often bear no resemblance to the truth. So there are no relationships given. I would guess that James was Elizabeth's older brother, but whether the Madens were their relatives is anybody's guess. Incidentally there were no AGLEYS anywhere in Bradford on the 1851 census card index. With such an unusual name I should be able to look through all the 1841 surname indexes to see if there were any more in other districts. You may have to get Elizabeth's marriage certificate to find her father's name. I will deal with George RILEY [Yes,I found him also--with parents],after I've had my evening meal. Cheers------Derek.

    3. Hi I know a Tumbling Hill Street. It is round the back of the University and College and down towards Thornton Road. My 1966/7 street list says the following. Tumbling Hill Street. ( two portions) Thornton Road to a point 17 yards south west of Carlton Street, and from Richmond Road for 84 yards. It actually runs from Thornton Road up to Richmond Road and is in the Listerhills area of town. Regards Lynne

They will do a search spanning five years and will search all of the areas of Bradford. They will charge £6.50 to provide you with a copy of the marriage certificate, should they find it. They haven't failed me yet. They can also provide birth certificates. They take credit card payments. They normally ask for a special form to be used when requesting the search. Why not e-mail them first and see if they can e-mail you a soft copy of the form? They also have copies of the booklets of surname indexes produced by the Bradford Family History Society which can also be purchased from the society in either booklet or microfiche form. Cds have also been produced of the West Riding 1841 and other areas for purchase by Stepping Stones. Hope this helps. Lynne

    2. Sharon Richardson
    3. I have a mystery with Emily HUDSON born abt 1886 in Bradford. on her marriage certificate her father is shown as John a Gas Stoker. I can't find a birth or any record of Emily, however I did find a Matilda HUDSON who fits the profile with a father John a Gas Stoker and bought her birth certificate just in case. I saw a posting of Alternate names on the list this morning and checked alternates for Matilda and found Milly, I am wondering if it is too long a bow to take Matilda to Milly to Emily? And would she put her alternate name on her Marriage certificate instead of her true name. By the way, she married Talbot BROGDEN in Bradford at St Peters in 1911. Any suggestions gratefully accepted. thanks Sharon Australia
