    1. [ BRAD] RE: FreeBMD
    2. Elaine, and others, In the scan-group work is being done on the births of 1904-1906, marriages and deaths still need to be scanned, and they are planning to expand that as time goes on. By the way, if you have at least half an hour to spare each week, and have basic computer skills, why not join the FreeBMD volunteers and help with the transcribing. For some of the years you need access to a reader. But if you dont, you can still help in the scan group. You will be allocated two scanned pages at a time, which you can transcribe with a program that you can download. Every little bit helps. 2. Hi Those who have ancestors buried in Undercliffe Cemetary might find this site of interest as I did, as my GGrrandfather Thomas BROWN 'S unmarked grave is there (which I actually visited nearly 30 years ago- even though it was just waist high weeds and grass- the caretaker was able to find the number of it. ) http://www.bbc.co.uk/bradford/sense_of_place/hidden_death_1.shtml Conditions were quite horrific in the early 1800 to mid 1800's in the handling of burials or I should say mishandling. 1. [ BRAD] Aimee Florence WHITEHALL or poss WILCOX born abt 1863.
    2. Lynne Gibson
    3. Hi all, Have just joined the list in hopes of breaking down a big brickwall. My Great grandmother, according to the 1901 census aged 37, was born in Bradford Yks. She does not appear on the 1881 census, no birth registered on the GRO index anytime in the 1860's, no registered marriages anytime between 1880 and 1901. Also no marriage for her in the GRO Index of Marriages registered at British Consulates marriages 1880-1895. Of 6 children, 2 born in Romania, and the rest supposedly born in London, only my grandmothers birth certificate is registered. Her name on this is given as Aimee Florence CARNEGIE, formerly WILCOX. According to family story, she had been married before to a WILCOX and her maiden name was WHITEHALL. Two other branches of my family, from other children of this marriage (Carnegie) who I have only recently made contact with, all have the same story about her maiden name and first marriage. Aimee Florence WHITEHALL was apparently a Catholic, and the eldest of her children was buried, age 12, in St Patricks Catholic Cemetery, Leytonstone, London. My query is what were the names and how many Catholic Churches were there in Bradford in the 1860's. As a Catholic, am I right in thinking there would definitely be a baptism for her somewhere? Also, would I be right in thinking that her first husband would have had to have died and that divorce would not have been an option in the 1880's? I am beginning to wonder if maybe there is no marriage recorded because if the first husband was not dead then maybe they just said they were married. Apologies for the length of this but wanted to give all the background I have, which as you see isn't much at all. Hope someone can give me an idea of where to go next. Cheers Lynne in NZ

    2. Lynne Gibson
    3. Hi Michael and list, Have just joined this list and I have used the website. Mainly because our local FHC does not have any of the GRO Indexes. So it is worthwhile for me. Works much the same as sitting down reading through fiche looking for entries. Pges are listed the same as you would find on fiche, by the first 3 letters of the first and last entries on each page. You can only do your initial search by Surname and years, first names don't figure. I personally think the biggest problem is that you are only able to search by the first 3 letters of a surname. This means if searching for WHITEHALL, it has sometimes given me over 20 pages (and as many as 50+) to choose from to look at ( it appears some years are not alphabetised properly, so got every page from WAA-WZZ to choose from). Other times it gives 3-5 pages of WHI, so you take a chance on picking the right page. If like me you can't search the indexes personally it is a wonderful tool, but it is paying for pages that you don't need to search because you have a choice of more than one that I hope they will be able to correct sometime However as its the only complete index available for me I will definitely keep using it. It has a major feature on the website. I have not tried it myself and have no intentions of doing so, since I am fortunate enough to live within 20 miles of the Family Records Centre at Islington and go there constantly, where you can access the original indexes in volumes for free. However, I have heard some criticisms of the site inasmuch as if you are looking for a very common surname and have only a vague idea of when and where a birth, marriage or death took place, then it could cost you quite a lot of money. If you are certain of the when-and-where, fine, but if you are looking for someone, say, born between 1860 and 1870 you will have to search through 40 quarters comprising hundreds of pages! Be clear about this - the site does NOT offer a transcribed index (except for entries after 1984), but scanned images from the original pages. It's the same thing as looking through page after page of the original books or microfiche, but you will be doing it online and totting up the cost. There is, of course, an alternative. Many libraries and record offices have copies of the GRO Indexes on fiche (the same ones as the website owners scanned them from). There are bound to be a number of libraries in Lancashire that possess copies (equally, there many in Yorkshire that have them). Find out where the nearest one is to where you live and then spend a day going there to inspect them. It may be the cost of your travel, etc, will be cheaper than spending ages online. However, IF there are any registers, then the most likely place they will be is the PRO. As you will know, the NIPR says the chapel was founded in 1744 and was a branch of Bacup, Lancs, until 1756. The only other reference is to the Baptist Handbook 1861. Not very helpful, I know! 3. Please could anyone tell me where the registers are kept for Cowling Hill Baptist Chapel, in the parish of Kildwick? The NIPR gives no information at all. I am looking for the birth of Eleanor (or Ellen) EMMOTT in around 1767 (or a later baptism entry): she was a minor when she married John STOW in 1786, and according to her MI she was 76 when she died in Feb 1844. She doesn't appear in the Keighley FHS transcript of the Kildwick Parish Church baptism register, or on the IGI, and as there are several EMMOTTs in the Cowling Hill MIs, I wondered if her birth might be recorded there.
