    3. I am really, really pleased. I just received in the mail this morning a birth certificate which takes me one generation backwards. The occupation of the father is listed as - I THINK - Shew- on one line and then the word Man below that. Has anyone ever heard of a Shew-Man or can anyone come up with an alternative spelling? Shew-Man doesn't sound right. Lynda in Montreal

    1. [ BRAD] Family History - a poem
    2. dawn bradfield (SO)
    3. this was emailed to me by a work colleague who knows about my obsession :D Many many years ago when I was twenty three, I got married to a widow who was pretty as could be. This widow had a grown-up daughter who had hair of red. My father fell in love with her, And soon the two were wed. This made my dad my son-in-law And changed my very life. My daughter was my mother, For she was my father's wife. To complicate the matters worse, Although it brought me joy, I soon became the father Of a bouncing baby boy. My little baby then became A brother-in-law to dad. And so became my uncle, Though it made me very sad. For if he was my uncle, Then that also made him brother To the widow's grown-up daughter Who, of course, was my step-mother. Father's wife then had a son, Who kept them on the run. And he became my grandson, For he was my daughter's son. My wife is now my mother's mother And it makes me blue. Because, although she is my wife, She is my grandma too. If my wife is my grandmother, Then I am her grandchild. And every time I think of it, It simply drives me wild. For now I have become The strangest case you ever saw. As the husband of my grandmother, I am my own grandpa.

    1. [ BRAD] Wills in York Registry 1636-1652
    2. dawn bradfield (SO)
    3. Hi All Just received a book in the post this morning - Wills in the York Registry 1636-1652 (printed in 1888 for the Yorkshire Archaeological Society) and pasted in the back is a newspaper clipping listing of those from the Bradford Parish. Here's the report & list [Bradford Observer(?) 24th July 1888]: "The Yorkshire Archaeological and Topographical Association have just issued the fourth volume of the Record Series (a publication in addition to the ordinary journal of the Association). The contents comprise a record of the Wills proved in the York Registry between 1636 and 1652. As Dr. Collins, the editor, explains in the introductory part, the usual practice of copying wills into registers was temporarily discontinued during the Civil Wars when, owing to the disturbed state of the country, most of the business of the kingdom came to a standstill. As a consequence, the will proved in the Exchequer and Prerogative Courts in York between the years 1636 and 1652 are to be found in bundles, either as originals or copies. It is from the materials accumulated, and which were never formally entered up in the registry, that the present volume has been compiled, and it accordingly constitutes an index to all wills proved during the period. The Council of the Association have it in contemplation to publish a complete index to the Wills in the York Registry from the earliest period, a boon which will be highly appreciated by archaeologists. Meanwhile the instalment now given will be none the less prized by those interested in genealogy and local history generally. The Volume is, as usual, excellently well printed, and the reputation of Dr. Colilns may be relied upon for its accuracy. We have taken out many references to wills referring to Bradford Parish, preserving the ancient form of spelling:- Wills Proved in 1636-7 Mary, widow of Thos. If you do find a name in the list I can look in the actual book and find the exact date of the will - just drop me a line with the name and the year..... unfortunately the book isn't indexed by surname so I can't really do block searches for surnames unless you can provide a rough year between 1636 and 1651 that your antecedent died. Sorry about not capitalising the surnames but I typed the mail up in word first and didn't get around to making the surnames CAPS! :D I'm sure you'll all forgive me this once :D Bright Blessings Dawn (in Swindon where the rain is coming dahn like steer rods!)

    1. [ BRAD] Historian's Lament
    2. Hi Listers, Came across this recently. I hope you enjoy reading it! A Family Historian's Lament (Author Unknown) I've been doing my Family History for nearly 30 years, diligently tracing my illustrious forbears, from Pigeon Lake to Peterborough, Penrith to Penzance, my merry band of ancestors has led me quite a dance. There's cooks from Kent and guards from Gwent and chimney sweeps from Chester. There's even one daft fisherman lived all his life in Leicester. There's no one rich and famous, no not even well-to-do, though a second cousin twice removed once played in goal for Crewe. I've haunted Record Offices from Gillingham to Jarrow, the little grey cells of my mind would humble Hercule Poirot. I've deciphered bad handwriting that would shame a 3 year old, and brought black sheep back into the fold. My bride of just three minutes I left standing in the church, as I nipped into the graveyard to do a spot of quick research. Eventually I found an Uncle, sixty years deceased, that was far more satisfying than a silly wedding feast. After three weeks of wedded bliss, my wife became despondent, she named the Pulic Record Office as co-respondent. I didn't even notice when she packed her bags and went, I was looking for my Great Grandad's will, who died in Stoke on Trent. But now my 30 year obsession is lying in the bin, last Tuesday week I heard some news that made me pack it in. 'Twas my darling mother, who was not long for this earth, casually informed me they adopted me at birth! Regards Michael from Lancashire

Do you know her former husband's name or Mary's maiden name? I have some information on Bradford MARSDENs unconnected to mine. 2. Rosemary Ackroyd
    3. Hi Knola If you can get to an LDS library, you can order Films 1648144 & 1648145 which are of an 'Alphabetical computerized grave index for Bradfords Undercliffe cemetery, 1854 - 1958'. The first is for consecrated graves & the second the very end of the consecrated graves & all the unconsecrated. I used the first a few weeks ago. It's easy to use (tho' it seems weird to film a computer printout). It's divided into 6 or 7 blocks of years & is alphabetic by surname within those blocks. Data consists of year of burial, a reference number, surname, fornames, 'condition' (infant, spinster, married woman, clogger's apprecentice - you'll do better with men here!) & area (BFD West, Bowling etc). No age unfortunately. Thhe LDS library reference says the original is in Bradford Central Library. Hope this is useful Rosemary Ackroyd ----- Original Message ----- From: "keith jeffery" <keithandknola@xtra.co.nz> To: <ENG-YKS-BRADFORD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 16, 2003 1:43 PM Subject: [ BRAD] Cemetery know-how. > Dear listers, > > I have a strong feeling that my great-grandmother was buried in the > Undercliffe cemetery in 1901.
