I think Duchy House is now an old people's home. My husband had an Aunt there for many years into the 1990s. have just found out that my 3x great-grandfather, Joseph WATSON, was born in Bradford. His father was Michael WATSON, who was a Stonemason. Joseph would have been born some time in the 1820's. I have looked on the IGI and the only Joseph listed with a father called Michael was born in Idle abt. 1827. This Joseph had Michael for his father and Martha Firth for his mother. Is anyone else searching for this family? Is there anyone on the list who could access any information which could tell me whether this Michael was indeed a Stonemason? Any information at all would be very gratefully received. Thanks in advance, Sue, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.
hello Lori Nothing to connect to your family but I believe that the Duchy House in Harrogate is now a private hospital [Nuffield I think]. My aunt was in there for surgery in the 1980's and this was in Queen's Road, Harrogate. Good morning list I' m new to this list, & I hope that some kind soul will be able to help My great great aunt Elizabeth Dean was in Bradford on the 1881c her address at the time is given as 14 Grosvenor Rd. She was a boarder living with the Pullman family, & gives her age as 25, & unmarried. Elizabeth started her life in a village named Harley, nr Wentworth, to the parents of Thomas & Ann Dean. After 1881, I cannot find any trace of her at all. It looks as though she was working in the mills in Bradford as she is listed as a Worsted Warper. Can anyone out there help to trace her of me. Thanks Gail

The note "with consent of..." indicates at least one of the parties was under age. I wonder if there was some debate about the validity of the marriage many years later? I suppose it could have been merely someone doing their family history (even in 1902) but the fact that the Rector signed across a stamp would suggest some more formal legal reason. A will is the obvious thought, as you suggest. Perhaps someone was needing to prove descendancy in order to inherit a share or perhaps to inherit some land or property. BTW, I have a friend called Fred Feather, who is chairman of the Essex Society for Family History, who has Bradford ancestry from Haworth, I believe. He is distantly related to Vic Feather, former secretary of the TUC, also a Bradford man Any connection? Hi List Does anyone know Park House, Steeton. Apparently it used to be a Maternity Home in the 1940's. Can anyone tell me if it is still there and where the records will be held. Thanks Marion in Salford
G'day Everyone, I have just found this on the 1891 census and wondered if there are any connections here for anyone..besides myself..This is the son of Joseph Mitchell and his wife Phoebe (nee Sutcliffe) Reference RG12 Piece 3519 Folio 71 page 30 Address : Duchy House, Queens Rd, Harrogate Harry Mitchell head 32 Living on owns means Born Bradford Annie Mitchell wife 37 Living on own means Born Denholme Gladys F Mitchell daug 7 b. Hi Judith and others, I think maybe if you look closely there near the end of Marion there is a stroke could this be the beginnging of the letter H...but the other letters to go with a name.? .I think eevrybody is on the right track ..It appears to be a surname The mother's maiden name was MITCHELL...hence the youngest daughter is named after Clara's mother..'Phoebe Mitchell'. Who incidently is in the 5th carriage Mrs Joseph Mitchell ( Phoebe Mitchell nee Sutcliffe) and is also the sister to the widow Elizabeth (Mrs Abraham Mitchell). Thanks for trying everybody...to make matters worse I cn't findhim on the 1901 census to try and see what midle name thye came up with..I thought if I was fortunate to find the entry this might sort out the problem but alas. Found the parents easily...William and Clara Foster. Kind regards Lori Mitchell I am not very good with this older style handwriting and would like some help please. If anyone has a copy of the 1891 census could they take a look at an entry on Piece 3645 Folio 61 page 4
Hi All In the back of a scrap book, I have come across a certified copy of a marriage certificate, prepared in 1902 by the Rector of Haworth Parish Church, for a marriage that took place on the 23rd July, 1827, between Richard Pighills or Pickles, and Hannah Feather, both noted as of this parish, and with a note 'by Banns with consent of', and signed T.W.Story (Rector) over a one penny stamp. I am researching Pighills, my wifes maiden name, and the certificate was in her fathers 'papers', but there is nothing to give me any idea as to why the certificate was needed. I cannot trace any relationship to Richard, although he could be a brother of John Pighills (c1795 - 1874), whose parents I have not yet proven, although his father was probably Michael Pighills, of Wilsden formerly of Kildwick. I suspect that it was probably needed for a will, but any other suggestions are welcome. Regards John
Hi Everyone, I am not very good with this older style handwriting and would like some help please. If anyone has a copy of the 1891 census could they take a look at an entry on Piece 3645 Folio 61 page 4 halfway down there is an entry for William Foster and family. If anyone still has the funeral report of Abraham Mitchell this couple were in the 6th carriage and the wife of William Foster is the daughter of Joseph Mitchell and brother of Rufus and Albert Mitchell riding in carriages in front of her ..4th and 5th carriages. Hi Lori Best I can do is - SARVET. Having said that the S is not really like his other capital S's. Had thought maybe Larvet but then changed my mind. Do you know his mother's maiden name? Hello Listers, My great great grandfather was WILLIAM BINNS born Haworth about 1804-1806. I have been unable to find a baptism for William but I believe his burial is recorded in the Haworth Parish records on 16th May 1854. Does somebody know whether there are any accessible records which can be checked to see which grave he was buried in or if there is a compilation of memorial inscriptions in which he might be mentioned? Thanks in advance for any ideas. By the way, listers may be interested to know that through this list I have now been able to find my Jones ancestors in Hanley, Staffs., in 1871. So much for the family tradition that they were welsh, which explained why we were all so musical and good singers.
