    1. [ BRAD] My introduction - Bottomleys and Eastwoods
    2. Linda Willimer
    3. Hello list, may I introduce myself, I am in Hopewell, just west of Princeton, New Jersey. We moved here from the UK two years ago, and I've only recently had time to start this fascination! I am trying to continue with the research my father did on his Bottomley and Eastwood families before he died six years ago. How I wish I'd asked my Dad to explain it all before he died, but then we didn't expect it to happen so quickly and I didn't intend to leave it all in a box for 5 years, so..........I'm hoping now that with the internet and all it's resources, I may be able to fill in the missing links. The Bottomley side of my tree starts with my father, Jack Bottomley, born 1920, died 1996. Sister Annie Mary & brother Charles. His father was Rudolf Armistead Bottomley, born 11.11.1895 to Joshua Bottomley & Mary Ann Brown, nee Scott. One of seven children, including 2 from Mary Ann's first marriage. Brothers Benjamin, Henry Ernest, David Cecil, Charles Vickers (died as a baby). Stepbrother/sister William & Lily Brown. All born Horton. Lived Chester Street, Horton. Have details of marriages of Benjamin, Henry Ernest and David Cecil. No record of their children, although I know my father made contact with some of them (his cousins). His mother was an Eastwood (Alice, born 9.6.1889), I am also trying to trace the Eastwood line. Rudolf's father was Joshua Bottomley, born 20.1.1854, died 7.11.1928. One of six children. Brother William Henry, sisters Elizabeth Ann, Harriet, Sarah Ellen, Mary. All born Horton, Bradford. Lived 144 Leeds Road/83 Garnett Street/3 Park Lane/5 William Street. Have details of marriage of William Henry & child John Rudolf Bottomley. Joshua's father was Benjamin Bottomley, born 8.6.1824, date of death unknown. Married a Mary Armitstead 28.12.1848. Two sisters, Rebecca & Martha. Details of marriage dates and spouses for sisters. Benjamin's father seems to be James Bottomley, possibly married to a Sarah Calvert on 9.2.1790. No details of death of either. Marriage date 9.2.1790. I have no further records for them. My paternal Grandmother was Alice Eastwood born 9.6.1889 in Thornton, Bradford (birth cert. says Victoria Street, Queensbury USD Clayton - not sure if this is/was a hospital) to Sam Eastwood and Hannah Nelson. She married my grandfather Rudolf Armistead Bottomley on 26.12.1917 at St John's Parish Church, Great Horton and had 3 children, Charles, Jack (my father) and Annie Mary. She died 8.11.1957, a year before I was born at St Lukes Hospital, Bradford. She was one of 5 children born to Sam & Hannah, three brothers, Harry, Willie & Albert, one sister Annie. Sam Eastwood left England (& his wife) in the 1920's ( I think) and came to America (Chicago) with Harry & Annie. I have details of Annie's subsequent marriage & death in Massachusetts but nothing about what happened to Sam & Harry. Albert stayed in Bradford, I recall meeting his wife when I was very young. Willie died in 1918. Sam Eastwood's father was a David born between 1824 & 1827, married a Mary Ann Newell on 30.5.1852 and an Elizabeth Spencer on 14.2.1885 a year after Mary Ann died. From his marriage to Mary Ann he produced Ellen, Martha, Mary, Sarah Ann, Sam, John and Elizabeth Ann! I have no record of any children produced with Elizabeth, but he s 58 when he married her!! I have a birth cert. but it doesn't correspond with his age given on the marriage & death certs. Need to follow up on that! So..... maybe there are some cousins in the UK, children of Albert & his wife Alice, or maybe there are some Eastwood offspring in or near Chicago from Sam or Harry! Hoping that someone may be able to expand on any of this. Thank you in anticipation, Linda Willimer (Bottomley)

    1. [ BRAD] A newcomer
    2. Jack Earnshaw
    3. Hello everyone, I have just joined the mailing list and am researching my Earnshaw ancestors. I came to Yorkshire for the first time last week and had a tremendous success in finding evidence and proof. But obviously, I want to find out even more. I started from knowing that my great great grandfather was born in Denholme (near Thornton) around 1841. I also had a birth certificate that "matched" this and gave his parents as John and Martha (nee Farrar) and the IGI had a possible christening at Haworth Church in 1842. I also had records of Thomas and his children after they moved to Midgley / Luddenden after he got married to Elizabeth Briggs in 1863. On the visit, I found Thomas' grave and that gave the same date of birth as the certificate I had. We searched the records at the Bradford archives and found the Christening entry - and this gave the same parents and same date of birth. So the Denholme link was conclusive (interestingly, Thomas was baptised by Patrick Bronte - so we do have famous connections!!) By luck, we found where Thomas was born and his parents lived from at least 1841 to mid 1880's - Edge Bottom in Denholme Edge. Next door was the Denholme Edge church (United Reform) and not only found John and Martha's grave, but graves of several of his close relatives and descendants. Again at Bradford we found John and Martha's marriage was at Bradford Cathedral in 1835 and he was baptised in Haworth in 1810. The first generation (John and Sarah) is still conjecture, but this was the only marriage at Bradford that seemed to fit. The tree I have generated of the Yorkshire connection, as a result of this visit is below - does anyone else know anything more, or can point me in the right direction? 1. [ BRAD] Introduction - BELDON interest
    2. Christine Digby-Johnson
    3. Good evening folks My name is Christine Johnson and I live in Sydney. NSW, Australia. My interest is in the surname of BELDON and the towns of Keighley, Bingley and Leeds where my Beldon families lived. My ancestor Joseph BELDON born circa 1790's married Sarah "Sally" HODGSON (b. 2-12-1797) on 1st October 1815 at Keighley. They had the following children known to me: Thomas 1818 - Keighley (my ancestor) Benjamin 1820 - Keighley Ann 1823 - Keighley John 1825 - Keighley William Hodgson 1829 - Keighley Joseph Circa 1835 - Moscow, Russia B.S. Joseph was a Mechanic by trade and it is probable that the company he worked for sent him and his family to Russia on a work contract as his last child Joseph BELDON (Jnr) was born in Moscow Russia (B.S.) circa 1835. As I have not been able to find the death of Joseph or his wife Sarah Beldon in Yorkshire I am wondering if Joseph & Sarah died in Russia as the 1841 & 1851 UK census records their children living with either their grandparents (Thomas & Sarah Hodgson) of Paper Mill Bridge Bingley or other relatives on the Hodgson side with no sign of their parents Joseph & Sarah. I know Joseph Beldon was deceased by 1838 as the Isaac Bowcocks Index of Apprenticeships records his son John BELDON, born 9th January 1825, parent Joseph BELDON mechanic Dec'd. Apprenticed to Richard Fowler, Indenture no. A118, Indent. Date 27th December 1838. John Beldon living with his uncle and aunt Richard and Susannah Fowler. Susannah being the sister of his mother Sarah Beldon (nee Hodgson). I seem to have hit the proverbial brick wall as I don't know where to begin looking in Russia for confirmation of their deaths?. Any advice would be much appreciated. Cheers Chrissy

    2. Margaret Elliott
    3. My name is Margaret, Halifax born, but nowadays I divide my time between Switzerland, where I have time to do genealogy research, and London, where I don't (but where the information is more easily available), working on a birth brief for my American children. My Bradford link is is through Annie BREAR, who was deaf and dumb. She was born in 1849 in Belgrave Place, Manningham, the daughter of David and Mary (nee HAIGH) BREAR, who married in Bradford in 1841. I have found quite a lot of information about the family, but cannot trace David's birth, which was around 1818 in Bradford (information from 1851 census, and his death certificate). His father's name was Thomas, and there appear to have been some non-conformist links. When I am able, I plan to trawl the Bradford West 1841 census, but in the meantime, can anybody help please?

    2. Patricia Andrew
    3. Hello Bradford Listers, My great-grandparents, Edward and Martha ANDREW lived in Bradford from about 1878 to about 1895. Edward was a police constable and eventually, police sub-inspector. Seven of their eight sons were born in Bradford and the family lived at: 21 Ripon Street, Bradford in 1879-1881, 5 Ripon Sreet, Bradford in 1883, and 49 Airedale Rd., Bradford East in 1891-1895 Edward died at home in March, 1895. I've checked with the Bradford Local Studies library - they weren't able to find any record of him. And the West Yorkshire Archives says that police personnel records only began in the later 1890s. I'd be ever so grateful if anyone has any suggestions where else I might check for: - Edward's burial - the burial of their son George Willis ANDREW, who died in the second quarter of 1892 - christenings of their sons Edwin, Charles, Frederick, John D., James E., George (above) and Percy Thank you for reading all this! He had a German, Mother, so I need to give her some credit, also ! I have the baptism dates of the WOGAN family, and it seems that Thomas WOGAN Jr. traveled with the HASLAM family, in their journey to Wisconsin. He Married a lady from New York, they lived in Buffalo, N.Y., for sometime. He is in the 1870 census, from Eveline Township, Charlevoix, Michigan, right on the page with James and his growing family. Thomas may have stayed in Michigan, I haven't persued his name. 2. susan wiseman
    3. Hi, I am Susan Wiseman, I was b. in Halifax (RILEY) I am now living in Loughton. in Essex. My main interest in Bradford starts with Mary Jones, my great grandmother b. 1864 she was the daughter of John Jones b. 1837 and his wife Elizabeth BANKS. I thought that there would be thousands of Joneses in Bradford but there were surprisingly few in the early 19thC. The family lived in or around Bolton St. for all the censuses. John was the son of another John (mar. Mary MATHER) b. 1801. and that John was the son of another John b. c1770 and Martha BRAY. Any connections to any of these lines welcomed Susan

    1. Re: [ BRAD] Bradford List - Introductions & OPC for Keighley.
    2. Diane Miles
    3. I am responding to the invitation to introduce myself on the Bradford list. My only known connection is that my great grandfather, William Nowell lived in Bradford with his wife Katy (Kathleen, Catherine??) at the time of the 1881 Census. My source told me he was a "traveller in stuffs". I expect this means he was a salesman who sold cloth to the retail trade. Eventually they had three children, one of whom was my grandmother, Eveline Nowell. Then it is alleged that William divorced Katy (?) and she went home to Dublin leaving the children (as women had to in those days). He remarried. (According to the family story, his new wife was the daughter of Honorius Lazurus Pointin). No one has found a record of the divorce or remarriage. Perhaps they lived in Bradford only for a little while. Someone suggested that if there was no divorce, that maybe the answer was that Katy went into an asylum and died there - perhaps there were endings more socially unacceptable even than divorce. My grandmother Eveline eventually was/became a member of the Plymouth Bretheren, and married my grandfather, Leonard Brown who was also a member of the Bretheren. __________________________________________________ Yahoo! 1. [ BRAD] Bradford List - Introductions & OPC for Keighley.
    2. Jan Perkins
    3. Hi Everyone I want to introduce myself. I am Jan (usually in Bronte Country), occasionally a little further afield. I co-listed the Bradford List with Elaine from the onset, we see it as our 'baby' BUT Elaine, had so little interests in this area, she decided to have one or two other small lists and go back to her beloved Sheffield, where she is Co-List owner, and I might add where we first met, my Fathers family coming from Sheffield. She was my inspiration with my Sheffield ancestors, as I did not know too much about the area. I also found out there was and OPC required for the Keighley area, so I have just offered to take it , as I love the place as I like remember it, before modernisation. I have lots of books, information, postcards, photographs old and new. I am more than happy to take any photographs listers are interested in...............just ask!! I would invite each one of you to introduce yourself again, giving the place you now live and tell us of at least one person you are seeking at the moment. A little about that person and the places they lived, that way, we all learn from each other. One-place-study mailing list One-place-study@british-genealogy.com http://www.british-genealogy.com/mailman/listinfo/one-place-study I see there are a 150 subscribed to the Bradford list, which is a nice number although it is always nice to have others. The Bradford List encompasses the whole of the BD area, which many of you will know goes to Skipton and Beyond, and many villages between Keighley & Bradford. I have the following names in my ancestry moving the Keighley, West Yorkshire in the mid 1800's from various places. WOOLLEY Devon/Cornwall - Bingley & Keighley CLEWER Worcs - Bingley & Keighley HOPKINS Gloucs - Bingley & Keighley SAUNDERS Beds - Keighley At the moment I am transcribing the Methodist circuit BMD's along with a couple of friends and I am almost through transcribing the 1891 census Workhouse and Infirmary entry for Keighley, which I will post as soon as it is proof read. In the next few weeks, I am hoping to get a web site up and running for Keighley & Bradford......and would welcome any help & additions any of you can give. 2. Jan Perkins
    3. Hi All Does anyone out there have any DIXON ancestry? I purchased an album some time ago at an antiques place, subsequently I realised that it contained postcards relating to a Maggie Dixon of Hawkeshead Ambleside, Cumbria...I think it was her album. At some time some of the postcards have been removed, but others have names & address of friends and relatives of Miss Dixon. The date from C1905 onwards with one or two as late as 1938/40. There are a few cards from Liverpool and one card postmarked Liverpool but I can't make out the date written to Maggie's sister Mrs TYSON. I have put some details & 3 photos on a webpage www.cheshire-uk.com/familyhistory/dixon.htm If anyone is a relative please contact me (obviously I want to make sure it does go to a verifiable 'descendant'). regards Lesley Warmest Wishes Jan in Bronte Country List admin ENG-YKS-Bradford. 1. Re: [ BRAD] BINNS
    2. David Binns
    3. Many thanks for your response Aileen. I have already seen the Haworth Parish records and the record of the burial you reference. The problem I have is that I have been unable to find a baptism for a William BINNSthat corresponds with this burial. What I hope to do is to find the grave in which he was buried and hope that this will enable the identification of other members of his family and even his parents. Clearly my best bet is to chase the MI's for Haworth either through the LDS or directly with the vicar or PCC. In passing my great grandfather, Wilkinson BINNS, son of the elusive William, was baptised at Haworth on 2nd October 1831, by Patrick Bronte. One further aside: An early message to this list has helped me to find much about my great grandfather Thomas JONES. I have just obtained a copy certificate for his third marriage, at the age of 62, to Emma HOLMES. They lived at 7 Green Street, Keighley. If anybody has information on the Jones's or Holmes's I'll be delighted to share what I have. ----- Original Message ----- From: Aileen Furness <furness@westnet.com.au> To: <ENG-YKS-BRADFORD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 04, 2003 1:32 PM Subject: [ BRAD] BINNS > For David, who wanted some information about William Binns buried 1854 at > Haworth. > > I have some fiche here at local LDS centre, found a one-line entry for > him - > William Binns abode was Bingley buried 16 May 1854 48 yrs of age the > minister was Thomas Jackson of Thornton. > > I know there is a list of monumental inscriptions on film or fiche for the > Church of England cemetery aat Haworth. 3. G'day Everyone, While scrolling through the 1891 census around the Shelf area on the disks I came across a couple of entries which I thought unusual and the first one made me laugh just a little. Edward Shackleton age 56, his occupation stated as 'Nothing in Particular' and another was James Mitchell age 33 occupation Casket Sizer. If anyone is interested James was living with his sisters Mary A age 35 and Agatha age 31. Kind regards Lori Mitchell
