    3. Heather, If you are researching events post 1837 then I strongly recommend you book a personal search session with the Bradford Register Office. For less than £20.00 you will be given 6 hours access to all of the Births, Deaths & Marriage records. You get the assistance of a clerk who will provide the indexes to you, check certificates and provide copies as required (you pay the usual fee for each certificate you purchase). I've done this twice and each time left with handfuls of certificates. In fact you can leave with so much that you will be well and truly skint. It's possible to find the birth, marriage and death for one person in one search session and even source the parents etc. The current and historical district knowledge of the staff is excellant. You can book the session by phone prior to arrival. Advice on how to use the time. Hi Listers A cherished dream is about to come true. I live in South Africa and most of my research has been done over the Internet. I have the unexpected chance to accompany my husband on a business trip and to slip away for 4-5days to Bradford, which seems to be the focal point for many of my paternal ancestors. I do realise that this is a very short time, but if I could consolidate what I have, and find new paths to research, I will be well-satisfied. Research will also be easier in future if I have a clearer geographical picture of the area. I would like advice about how best to utilise the time available to me. Although I belong to this and a couple of other Yorkshire lists, there is so much information that I do not really have a clear picture of what is available to researchers and where to go to find it all. Bradford Central Library is probably the place to start and things might fall into place after that, but I would like to have other ideas. I have lots of unverified information from sites like the LDS and would like to verify what I have and find out more. One particular gap is that of marriages and therefore maiden names. My Bradford names in the direct line are: CRAVEN; MITTON; ILLINGWORTH; ROSS; CHAPMAN . Sidelines are: FORTMAN; LEACH; SMITH; WRIGHT; DENNISON; BROWN; LYNCH; LOWES; BINNS; LAVERACK; SHERRATT; YORKE BARRACLOUGH; KEIGHLEY; BENTLEY and HALL. If you know Bradford well from a genealogical point of view, and have the time to spare, I should be extremely grateful for any advice you can give me. Thanks in advance. 3. Welcome, Jan. Great to see such activity on the list again.I am researching mainly BENTHAM. Will post full interests shortly but need help meanwhile re an1843 inquest. My gggfather Thomas Bentham, weaver, lived in Thornton, Bradford & died between 1841 and 1851 censuses. I have a death cert (the only Thomas Bentham death in Bradford parish1841-1851) for 22 Dec 1843, Death by hanging! (found in woods) informant, the Coroner!. Would this have been in the local paper? Need to crosscheck he is mine by finding out where he was living (not given on the certificate). He too was a weaver & the age is right. Can anyone help? Are local newspapers of that date kept in Bradford library or archives? Diana Wilkinson, Hertford, UK

    1. [ BRAD] Wm.MORTIMER 1777
    2. Joan Ann Powell
    3. Is there anyone who could help me dig a little deeper into my roots, please? In trying to find the parents of William MORTIMER and his wife Hannah MILLER of Drighlington and Gomersall respectively, I have searched the following: IGI Film of Bishops Transcripts for Birstall Parish Microfiche as above What I found is: William MORTIMER probably b.17 December 1777 at Birstall (Drighlington) Clothier. This is the most likely birth with the parents being Thomas and Mary MORTIMER of Birstall Syke, Clothier. Hannah MILLER b.19 October 1777 Gomersall Married 24 August 1797 Birstall Children all registered at Drighlington: Esther (transcribed Easter) b. 7 March 1798 Mary b. 14 Sept 1800 Meriah b. 30 Jan 1803 Frances b. 6 April 1806 My search, and the identification of the children, has been hampered due to the marriage of William MORTIMER to Hannah SPENCER on 28 Feb 1798 at Birstall. This William was a Standishmaker (maker of pen and ink stands) of Cleckheaton. The occupation has been my only way of separating them. Neither the LDS Film, nor the fiche, gave full registration details. Is there anyone who has access to this information and could check it for me, please? Ever hopeful in Australia, Joan Powell (née MORTIMER) All incoming and outgoing mail is virus checked by both Norton and AVG www.grisoft.com jopo@burnett.net.au

    3. Further to my posting regarding the SMART family from Horton earlier on I have come up with one or two snippets, if anyone can add any more I'd be very happy to hear them. Francis Frederick SMART born 1874 Bradford and his family continued to live in 1 Howard Street until at least 1891. However in 1891 his father seems had died and he is under the care of his stepmother Edna Smart aged 36 of Clayton. I think this may be the housekeeper living with them in 1881 and 24 years younger than the father Fred. Also in 1891 are a Mary Smart adopted daughter born Southport (this may be the May MARTIN that appears as a visitor in 1881.) and a niece and nephew Alice & George DYSON born Clayton, aged 19 and 17. The DYSON's were probably the children of John below in 1881 - John DYSON Head M Male 36 Sandal, York, England Gardener (Dom Serv) Clara DYSON Wife M Female 37 Clayton, York, England Alice S. 1. [ BRAD] Ann and David BENSON 1861 Census
    2. Greetings If any one is looking at the 1861 census, could they have a look and see if Ann BENSON, age unknown and her son David aged about 1 are living at 9 Cork St Laister Dyke. I can only guess at Cork St, the certified copy of the birth entry for David is hard to read. If any one finds the entry in the census, I would be interested to know who else is living at that address. 1. [ BRAD] SMART and GARTHWAITE of Bradford
    2. Sue Rylands
    3. Hi Everyone, I was searching FreeBMD last night for any new entries and found a Frances GARTHWAITE marrying possibly a Francis Frederick SMART in the Dec Qtr of 1895 in Bradford. Around 18 months ago I found a picture in a family album of a house called 'Wensley' in Long Crendon, Buckinghamshire. My enquiries to the local archivist revealed this property was lived in by Mr and Mrs Francis and Frances SMART in the 1930's, who I had no known connection with at the time as far as my EDMONDSON research was concerned. Frances GARTHWAITE was born 1869 in Shipley to Charles GARTHWAITE and Lydia KNOWLES (of Cleckheaton). Lydia had a sister Jane born 1849 Cleckheaton who married into the Edmondson line. So it looks as though this house was connected after all but to the other side of the family. Does anyone have any connection to the Smart's below in order to see if there are any descendants from this branch, I would dearly love to hear from someone. The son Francis was married and still living in Shipley in 1901 so moved between 1901 and 1924, before that Wensley was owned by Frederick William SMART (the Fred listed below maybe?) Francis is listed as a 'writing master' in 1901, any ideas what this might be? 3. Hi Listers Can anyone tell me if York Library holds any material on the trials and executions carried out in York? I am particularly interested in a trial which would have taken place prior to an execution (hanging) in April 1878. I think the PRO may hold the details but York is nearer to get to for me. I have found some info on the internet about executions in England since 1606 but would like to find out more about the circumstances of the trial etc. Any help would be gladly received. 1. [ BRAD] Introduction and interests..
    2. Sue Rylands
    3. Hi Everyone, I am Liverpool born but with Bradford ancestors now living in the Midlands. I have been researching my family history for over 10 years ever since my Mum said she was descended from the HOLT shipping line (China Boats) of Liverpool (which by the way I have never found the connection for). My Great Grandfather John Robert EDMONDSON was born in Wibsey in 1876, moved to Birkenhead, Cheshire in 1903 and married Amelia DILLON, who was born in Birmingham. He was a confectioner by trade but his forefathers all seemed to be in the butchery and cattle dealing trade. John was brother to Mary, Annie Elizabeth, Lucy Jane and Emily all born Wibsey between 1875 and 1882. Only John and Lucy were to marry and produce offspring, Lucy marrying Frank Stanley WALDEN of Northampton. Their parents were Richard EDMONDSON 1852 - 1885 of Low Moor and Jane (nee KNOWLES) 1849 - 1932 born Cleckheaton died Low Moor, daughter of John KNOWLES born Gomersal 1812 - 1885 Cleckheaton and Grace CLOUGH 1822 - 1850 Cleckheaton. Richard was cattledealer, John an assistant grocer and his sisters dressmakers and school teachers in the various census records. Richard's siblings were Robert , Joseph Firth, Sarah Anne, .Mary Elizabeth, Annie, Phoebe and Christopher born between 1841 and 1857. As far as I know only Robert and Richard married ( Robert marrying Lucy JOWETT daughter of Jonas JOWETT and Phoebe WHITHAM). Their parents were Richard EDMONDSON of Wibsey 1819 - 1861 and Elizabeth FIRTH 1818 - 1888 daughter of Joseph FIRTH and Charlotte SYKES of Wibsey. Siblings of Richard Snr , Anne, William, Rachel, Elizabeth, Rose, Abraham, Christopher, Phoebe, Ruth, Mary and Robert born between 1812 - 1834 marrying CHARLESWORTH, BARRACLOUGH, MITCHELL, BLAMIRES, HODGSON, LUMB, KEIGHLEY, PYRAH Finally Richard and siblings were the children of Robert EDMONDSON 1790 - 1850 of Holroyd House, Wibsey and Mary BASTOW 1792 - 1859. Robert is possibly the son of a William EDMONDSON of Allerton Farm, Allerton born 1763 or the son of another William born 1735 (either eldest or youngest son of one of them but I have not been able to confirm this, he may have been born elsewhere and baptised in Bradford or William may have been and settled in Allerton. Mary was the daughter of Abraham and Sarah BASTOW. Known related cousins branched to Eccleshill, Rawdon, Churwell (BARRACLOUGH'S), Northampton (WALDEN), Manningham, Horton and of course Birkenhead and Liverpool from where I descend. I would like to find more relations descended from this main branch of Edmondson's if possible or from any of the other names mentioned. Hope to hear soon. Warmest Regards, Sue. 3. Thank you Derek. You Bradford people are just the greatest! These three families are not mine - Joyce has come up with the correct family, one living in Spring Forley (?) Place, Manningham , headed by Thomas BREAR a stuff weaver, and his wife Martha, and with 'my' David age 20, a cabinet maker. However I should be interested to see if either of the other BREAR families you have found includes a Samuel BREAR (age about 13). In the 1881 census I found a Samuel BREAR and family living in Belgrave Place. This was the address given in 1849 by Thomas' son David BREAR on one of his children's birth certificates, but I have not been able to establish any connection between the two BREAR families. Again, my thanks and appreciation for the trouble you have taken. Another brick wall,no baptisms for either,no trace of Elys in the area. Mariahs parents were Samuel Moorhouse & Martha MORRELL(details from Samuels will). Alice JOHNSON (formerley THOMPSON) was a widow when she married my grandfather. She was born at Richmond & had a son George born 1893 at Richmond. I would really like to find the marriage of Samuel Shackleton & Elizabeth Smith,I have checked parish registers for Bingley,Cullingworth & Haworth but can,t find it anywhere. Hope this might bring a brick wall down!!. Best wishes, Joyce

    1. [ BRAD] Introduction (reposting)
    2. Roy Stockdill
    3. THIS is a reposting, folks, because my first message appears to have disintegrated somewhere in cyberspace! Apologies, then, if it appears twice... ROY STOCKDILL - one of the earliest members of this list. Chairman, the London Group of the Yorkshire Consortium of Family History Societies and various other roles in the UK genealogical world (see my signature below); living in Hertfordshire for the past 38 years. Born in Bradford, as was my father, 3 of my 4 grandparents, and 3 of my 8 gt-grandparents (others moved to Bradford in the 19th century for work). On the 1881 census, all of my 8 great-grandparents, with the exception of one gt-grandmother who died in 1878, were in Bradford. I posted many lengthy messages about the history and social history of Bradford in the early days of the list, for which see the archives at rootsweb. These included a great many names, also descriptions of social conditions in Bradford mills and houses in the 19th century, and of the many institutions in the life of the city. About 80% of my ancestry and heritage is in Bradford and I have numerous books on the city, so I suppose I am almost a "resident expert" here! My gt-grandfather ROBERT STOCKDILL(DALE) arrived in Bradford from Easingwold, North Yorkshire (where he was born in 1806), probably some time in the 1830s and died there in 1896. He was married 4 times and had many children by 3 of his wives. All the Stockdills (but not necessarily Stockdales) in Bradford are related to me. Robert's 4th wife (and my gt-grandmother) was Charlotte WORSNOP, born at Scarborough in 1823 but I feel fairly certain the Worsnops were a Bradford family also. They were found extensively at Wibsey and Low Moor. Andrew YOUNG, my other paternal gt-grandfather, was a West Country weaver from Gloucestershire/Somerset who moved to Bradford to find work in the 1870s. My other connections..... MIDGLEY (one of the most common Bradford names), my mother's ancestry. My Midgleys go back in Bradford well into the 18th century (the earliest I can reasonably confidently trace is my gt-gt-gt-grandfather John Midgley, probably baptised at Horton Lane Independent Chapel in 1792, son of another John Midgley and Sarah SWAINE). John jr became a drummer in the 52rd Regt of Foot and married Jane PLEVIN from Nantwich in Cheshire. My gt-grandfather, yet another John MIDGLEY (it's like John Smith in Bradford!) married Clara BRACEWELL, b. in Bradford 1861, dau. of Richard Bracewell who had moved to Bradford from Arncliffe in the Yorkshire Dales and became a hansom cab driver. GIBSON - my gt-grandfather JOHN JAMES GIBSON was born in York in 1857 but moved to Bradford and became a master signwriter. He married... Ada BRADLEY, dau. of Thomas BRADLEY, a Bradford railway worker. Thomas's wife was Sarah MOODY, about whom I know very little other than that she was born in Bradford about 1822. In earlier generations, I also have the name BROOK from Pudsey (also very common in the Bradford area). 2. Jan Perkins
    3. Hi John & List Naturally we would all be pleased to see some of the interests on the family tree, may help more than one of us.................So please feel free to post anything which you think will be advantageous to us all. I am finished transcribing the Keighley Workhouse & Informary, in the final checking stages, after which I will post this to the list. Then intend to start on the Bradford Workhouses, this way, many people can find people from outside of the area who were there on census night.None of my families on them BUT I just know someone will find many interests on them. So please feel that you can post anything of interest on this List...........information from the few benefits many. No rules as to postings - just like to keep it harmonius............and it is certainly running quite happily without my interventions.
