    3. Hi Everybody, Just to let you know that a letter to the Central Library, Bradford, outlining my difficulty, resulted in a prompt response which enclosed a transcription of the inscription on the memorial stone of the grave of William BINNS and his first wife Martha. A plan of the Haworth Parish Church Graveyard was also included. We are indeed fortunate to have such a superb resource available to help us in our researches. From the above it now is proved that William was born in 1806, but certainly his baptism is not recorded in Haworth. There is one William baptised at Bradford in 1806, father John Binns, but no other information appears on the record. If somebody on the list has any ideas as to how I can further identify William and John I will be delighted to hear from them. Thanks for your help. Best wishes, David Binns, Tyneside ----- Original Message ----- From: John Spencer Wilkinson <jswilks@lineone.net> To: David Binns <davidbinns@qual-chem-tech.co.uk>; <ENG-YKS-BRADFORD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 28, 2003 12:01 PM Subject: Re: [ BRAD] BINNS > Hi David > > The Bronte Museum has an extract of the MI's for Haworth Graveyard, > and I think that Keighley library may have a copy. Lydia was widowed by 1871 and I 'm unable to find a marriage just yet on FreeBMD...so I thought the census might be a good way to confirm my suspicions.... Children born by 1861 are Annie Jennings 4 b. Horton Frederick William 2 b Horton Grateful for any help in regard to these persons. Kind regards Lori Mitchell

    3. Hi, Could anyone help me as I have hit that old brick wall. I have one JOHN FARRER christened in Bradford Cathedral in 1972 who also has a brother Henry christened in Bradford Cathedral in 1787 both of them having a father called John, but I also have A John FARRER christened in Bradford Cathedral in 1973 who has a father called Richard. On The family vault, we have both John and Henry, but John's date is 1973 (which maked him being the son of Richard) but I can't find Richard having a son called Henry. So how do I find which is the father of John - is it John or Richard ? Hope this makes sense, as this is my first attempt at this list. Maureen

    3. Hi, After my posting regarding the elusive Emily HUDSON, I have had a suggestion that I look up her Baptism record, or that of Matilda to see what name is there. Can anyone please suggest which church she may have been Baptised in, if it is the family I am hoping the lived in the Manningham area, If I can get an idea of the church I may be able to order the records from the LDS over here. Many thanks to all who have made suggestions already. Best regards Sharon Australia

    3. Hi Listers I was born in Bradford and several generation of my family come from the Keighley/Worth Valley. Hello Bradford listers, "Sharon Richardson" <sharich@bigpond.net.au>wrote: ... >I have purchased various birth certificates for Emily's born in 1885/6/7 >but non have had a father named John. > ... For anyone who doesn't know, when you order BMD certificates from local register offices, you can specify contents, eg, "if the father's name is John." If the certificate doesn't match your criteria, the register office will return your fee. As well, if they're not terribly busy, some office staff will look for an entry that does match and ask you if you want that one. If you order certificates from the GRO, they'll return part of your fee if your criteria doesn't match. I just received my money order back like this last week from the Salford RO. Saves my money for certificates I really want! cheers, Pat Andrew Victoria BC Canada

    1. [ BRAD] For those who like a puzzle Emily HUDSON
    2. Sharon Richardson
    3. Hi, After posting my introduction, I have had kind responses from people trying to find my elusive Emily HUDSON (some of you have also tried after earlier postings) I thought I would give you all the details I have, so that if you do fancy putting on the Deer Stalker you are armed with the appropriate information! My Grandmother's birth certificate shows her parents as Emily BROGDEN formerly HUDSON and Talbot BROGDEN a Railway Drayman of 45 Tennyson Place Bradford, she was born 17 Sep 1912. Her parents marriage certificate has the following information: Talbot BROGDEN 24 years Railway Drayman of 42 Tennyson Place father Samuel BROGDEN Dealer in Scouring stones (Hawker) Emily HUDSON 25 Years Hotel Chambermaid of Victoria Hotel Bradford father John HUDSON Gas Stoker The Parish Church of St Peter Bradford 26 December 1911 witnesses John Breare and Fanny Brear. I found a John HUDSON a Gas stoker on the 1881 census in Manningham with wife Grace and daughter Ada, (one of my great Aunts is named Ada). I was sure this would be the family, so looked them up on the 1891, and yes they had a daughter born in 1886, but her name was Matilda. I got the birth certificate for Matilda, hoping to find her middle name was Emily, but non was given. Grace is shown as Grace E HUDSON but the E stands for Ellen not Emily. I have purchased various birth certificates for Emily's born in 1885/6/7 but non have had a father named John. Emily and Talbot had daughters Emily, Ada, Clara and Louise. When Louise was just a baby, Emily left Tablot for another man, leaving him with the three older children. My grandmother being the oldest was left to care for the others and never forgave her mother for leaving them, so refused further contact with her, therefore my mother never met her grandmother. I believe Ada is still living in Bradford, her married name is KELSEY and she would be in her late 80's. Clara is alive but non compos in Sheffield her married name is Rae, I tried to ring her from here in Australia, she was so pleased to hear from me she went to put the kettle on to make me a cuppa and never returned to the phone! I tried a couple of times, but it was too confused. My Grandmother Emily married Thomas CREASER and they both passed away when I was only a child. Well, if you care to take up the search I would be only too pleased and am happy to attach copies of the certificates for your viewing. I have a gut feeling that Emily and Matilda are one and the same, but at this time no proof. Thanks for taking the time to read this, regards Sharon Australia

    3. [For Tim,but he wont mind you sharing the info.] Hi Tim, I had some unexpected time on my hands this afternoon,so I went to the library for your look-up. It was one of the easiest I've ever done There were 11 Brear refs.for Manningham and yours was the 2nd.I looked at BRADFORD CENSUS 1841,Manningham District Skinner Lane. [All surnamed BREAR ; all born Yorkshire Samuel, aged 40,Stuff weaver Nanny,40 Mary,20,Factory weaver Hannah,19,Factory Stuff weaver Elizabeth,15, do. Joseph,10 Maria,9 Robinson ? 6 Solomon,3 Eliza,9 months ======================================= Tim,do you think Nanny's maiden name might have been ROBINSON ? I put a query after the son Robinson, because I wasn't sure if it was Robinston or Robinson ; other researchers felt sure it was the latter. Cheers--------Derek.

Her maiden name was BROGDEN, so far from her birth certificate I have found that her father was Talbot BROGDEN born 1889 and her mother Emily HUDSON born 1886. I have their marriage certificate, and have parents for Talbot, but cannot find any record of Emily's birth or record of her on the 1901 census. I am still of the beleif/hope that she is in fact Matilda HUDSON daughter of John and Grace. 1. [ BRAD] Introduction
    2. hes.mail
    3. Hello listers, Joining in the introductions. My name is Eliane Heseltine (nee Mok). I am born and bred Dutch myself, but my husband John was born in Bradford. We live in Zoetermeer, the Netherlands. Our HESELTINE-line starts in Wensleydale. At least two brothers, John and Thomas, came to Bradford (Bowling area) around 1845, presumably to help build the mills (they were stonemasons). John married Mary BRIGGS (from Bradford). Their son William married Teresa DIXON (from Huddersfield). They had three sons that fought in the same regiment (West Yorkshire, 1/6 btn) in WW1: Leonard (my husband´s grandfather), Charles and Harry. It was something that wasn´t talked about in the family. Through sheer luck I managed to find some information in the wardiaries, when I visited the PRO last year, that confirmed that the H. Heseltine mentioned on the Commonwealth Wargraves site was actually greatuncle Harry. It also specified where he died. This last weekend my husband and I travelled to Belgium to vis! it his grave, where he died, and also where Leonard got wounded later. A very moving experience. Leonard married Laura GREENWOOD. This brings me to one of my brick walls. Laura was born in 1888 in Bradford. I can find her with her sister Annie (born 1890) and her father Rowland on the 1901 census, with Rowlands second wife, Mary Emma (CLEGG). (They married in 1895). However, I haven´t been able to find Rowland, Laura and Annie on the 1891 census. I am especially interested in any siblings. So much for the direct line. The side of my husband´s mother has a lot more brick walls. His mother, Sylvia, was born in Worcester, MA. Her mother, Emmie ARMITAGE, was born in Huddersfield (still looking for the birthcertificate), went to the US, where she married Jerome GAREAUX, and had five daughters (Sylvia was the youngest). Somewhere around 1920 Emmie returned to Bradford, with her daughters. The story in the family was that Jerome disappeared and was presumed dead before Sylvia was born. However, I have found in the US-census that Jerome was still very much alive (and remarried) in 1930, in Rhode Island. He died in 1954. But that is about all I could find about the family until now. I am still looking for the names of Sylvia´s sisters. Best wishes to all, Eliane Heseltine

    1. [ BRAD] Surname interests
    2. Howard Geddes
    3. Hi List, In response to Jan's request, here's my surname interests in the area. All my folks come from various parts of Scotland, bar one who immigrated from Bradford: my gt-grandparents Cornelius BOTTOMLEY and Rebecca ARMITAGE, who moved from Bradford to Glasgow with their first born Armitage BOTTOMLEY abt 1860 (one day I'll find where they were in 1861!). I've got good coverage of my Bottomley side, including collateral lines, but the Armitage line stops with Rebecca's father Samuel ARMITAGE born around 1804 in Yorkshire, possibly Leeds but then again possibly not: he married Rachel FEATHER d/o James FEATHER and Mary WOOD thought to be from Keithley and Haworth respectively, and died 1845 Otley Rd Bradford. Up the Bottomley line: gt-gt-gdparents: James BOTTOMLEY Shelf and Hannah CARR abt 1801 Bowling, maybe d/o John CARR Martha WILSON. 3xgt-gdparents: John BOTTOMLEY Cockroyd Farm N Bierley and Sally HAGUE, she died 1819 probably Soaper Lane N Bierley, thought to be b 1771 Bradford d/o Joseph Hague. JB remarried, to Bathsheba HOLROYD. 4xgt-gdparents: James BOTTOMLEY and Hannah KELLETT, she died 1830 Cockroyd Farm N Bierley, thought to be b 1753 Willow Hall, Halifax to Moses KELLETT. 5xgt-gdparents: John BOTTOMLEY and Mary HELLEWELL. This ends the strict Bradford connection, for he was born Dec 1771 in Northowram to Jeremiah and Jane BOTTOMLEY and moved across the border to Cockroyd Farm N Bierley where he died in 1793, and she was born Dec 1771 in Eringden Heptonstall to Daniel HELLEWELL and Susan PLATTS and died abt 1803 Cockroyd. Information on these maternal lines off the main Bottomley line would be welcome. Howard Geddes
