    1. [ BRAD] Lookup Birstall Parish
    2. Joan Ann Powell
    3. Hello Listers, I have searched LDS Fiche as well as Film but am still unable to establish parents for the following: William MORTIMER, b.Cleckheaton/Birstall about 1777. Married - Hannah MILLER of Gomersall on 24 August 1797. Unfortunately, only Bishops Transcripts are available at FamilySearch and they don't give any additional information in this case. Is there anyone who could access actual Parish Records for this period and send me details of witnesses and parents, please? As I am unsure where these records are kept, I am posting the same letter to the Leeds List as well. Kind regards, Joan Powell (née MORTIMER) Researching from Australia.

    3. Thanks for the note Sharon. Unfortunately it is more than just the date: it is his occupation, his place of birth given on the census, and the fact that I cannot find his children's births anywhere. It is looking likely that the marriage of Thomas BREARE and Martha ROBINSON in Addingham, at just the right time, was a red herring which has taken me in the wrong direction. Thomas and Martha BREAR may well have originated in Manningham after all, as the registers for St Lukes Church in Manningham appear to be available only in Bradford Archives, so somehow I need to get a look at them. 3. I'm still struggling vainly with my Thomas and Martha BREAR(E) of Manningham, but despite a lot of information from a lady with a transcription of the Addingham Parish register up to 1812, I am still unable to be certain whether or not they are the couple that married in Addingham in 1809. 'My' Thomas BREAR died in Manningham in 1857. His age is given as 69 on his death certificate, but as he was only 60 on the 1851 census, there may have been some doubt. Martha was certainly a few years older. The census said that they were all born in Manningham Is anyone with access to later Addingham records able to tell me if the Thomas BREARE born there in 1784 died there? At least that way I can "eliminate him from my enquiries". Alternatively can someone explain why I am able to find neither the birth of this Thomas BREAR, nor his marriage to Martha, nor the birth of any of his children (Mary, Ann, David and William) except a daughter Sarah, who was baptised in Bradford Parish Church in 1811? Which registers should I be searching for Manningham? Help please! Margaret Switzerland

    2. Sharon Richardson
    3. Hi, Having seen postings for the name BREARE I would like to add my very small contribution. I believe that Fanny BROGDEN born in Bradford in 1882 married John BREARE. This is not confirmed, as I arrived at this conclusion as a John and Fanny BREARE were the witnesses at the wedding of Talbot BROGDEN and Emily HUDSON, and one of Talbot's sisters was Fanny. Anyone have John and Fanny in their tree who can confirm this? Thanks Sharon Australia

    3. Lori, I am sure there must be a connection with us. But I have only recently found the names Foster and Mitchell on my tree. My family, Earnshaw, came from Denholme. Two of my ancestors married into the Foster name and the son of one of them (Joseph Foster Earnshaw) married Emma Mitchell in 1879. Emma's address was Edge Bottom in Denholme, and she was born in Langfields. I know there is a large number of Foster's in the area and presumably an equal number of Mitchell's Over time, I want to expand my knowledge of this part of the family, as I don't understand why Joseph Foster Earnshaw moved from Denholme to Luddenden about the same time as my ggg grandfather did (he was JFE's great uncle) have a look at http://jearnshaw.me.uk and see if there is a name you can fit into your tree. 1. [ BRAD] Keeping your mind open
    2. Jack Earnshaw
    3. Last week I posted a question about the Farrar's and whether they were related to Farrer. In it I said I had ordered certificates to try to patch together some Earnshaw names. I was trying to find whether the person christened and buried as William John Earnshaw was the person who was married etc as John Earnshaw (as the wife's first names were the same). Yes they were the same person as address, father etc fitted exactly. But the reason I was trying this search was to try to find where a Joseph Foster Earnshaw (although called John Foster on 1881 census) may have fitted in. I guessed that the Foster middle name meant his mother was originally Foster and there was a marriage of John Earnshaw to Mary Ann Foster. When I looked at the birth certificate, initially my heart sank as his father was Benjamin Earnshaw and mother was Martha (nee Foster). Then it dawned on me - John Earnshaw had a brother Benjamin and he married a Martha something. So I had got it, almost, right. Joseph Foster Earnshaw was a family member - but two brothers had married two Foster girls - I guess they might have been sisters. So from one guess, but keeping a slightly open mind, I managed to fit together a large branch rather than just another twig on the tree. But I wish I could get into their minds and not just see bits of paper. Why did half the family move from Denholme to Wilsden - and then come back again a few years later? Anyway, quite a leap forward, but I wish I lived a bit nearer so I could follow up more searches rather than just save them up for another "holiday" in Yorkshire. 3. Tim I am still desperately trying to sort out my Manningham BREARS, without too much success. I'm pretty sure now that my Thomas and Martha Brear originated in Bradford, not Addingham, but I can find neither birth nor marriage for them. However, I have the following information which may (or may not) be of interest to you, supplied by two helpful ladies who have the Addingham records. A Samuel Breare, son of Joshua Breare, was born in Addingham on 10 Feb 1798. The reason I think you might be interested in him is that there are also lots of Robinsons in Addingham. Thomas Breare, who married Martha Robinson in 1809, and who I hoped might be 'mine' called his son Robinson too. Hope this helps Regards Margaret ----- Original Message ----- From: "derek deShelfe" <derekdeShelfe1@activemail.co.uk> To: <ENG-YKS-BRADFORD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 11, 2003 4:31 PM Subject: Re: [ BRAD] BREAR,1841 Census,Bradford. > [For Tim,but he wont mind you sharing the info.] > Hi Tim, > I had some unexpected time on my hands this afternoon,so I went to the > library for your look-up. > It was one of the easiest I've ever done > There were 11 Brear refs.for Manningham > and yours was the 2nd.I looked at > BRADFORD CENSUS 1841,Manningham District > Skinner Lane. > [All surnamed BREAR ; all born Yorkshire > Samuel, aged 40,Stuff weaver > Nanny,40 > Mary,20,Factory weaver > Hannah,19,Factory Stuff weaver > Elizabeth,15, do. > Joseph,10 > Maria,9 > Robinson ? 6 > Solomon,3 > Eliza,9 months > ======================================= > Tim,do you think Nanny's maiden name might have been ROBINSON ? 2. Margaret Elliott
    3. Has anyone done any work on the family of Thomas and Martha BREAR who were in Manningham, at least from the beginning of the nineteenth century? I have a lot of information, but it just doesn't add up. For sure I know that Thomas was a weaver and died on 27 May 1857 while living on Whetley Lane. His age at death was given as 69. His wife Martha was a laundress, older than Thomas according to the 1851 census, and still alive in 1861. Certain children are Sarah, Mary, Ann, David and William, born between 1811 and 1826, but I have found none of their births. David married Maria HAIGH in Bradford in 1841: Sarah and Mary were unmarried laundresses. The IGI lists a marriage in Addingham between Thomas BREARE and Martha ROBINSON in 1809, but I have no proof that this is the correct one. Also I am very wary of this information as the IGI lists a possible birth for "Thomas or John" BREARE in Addingham on 1st Sept1784, baptised 17th September. Has anyone access to Addingham records who could check that out for me please? I've never come across an 'or' before! Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. Regards Margaret

I was born there the year after your aunt. It is actually St Luke's Hospital, Horton Lane, where half the population of Bradford was born. Of course it is still there. I recently returned to St Luke's to visit an elderly cousin who was in there for a few weeks - the first time I'd been back since my emergence into the world. 3. Hello, Managed to get hold of my Mum's cousin Margaret RAYNOR nee KELSEY. she remembers as a child in the 1940's visiting a Haberdashery/dressmakers store in Bradford which was run by either her Aunt Louie BROGDEN or her Grandmother Emily BROGDEN nee HUDSON (yes my elusive Emily). Apparently it was a Haberdashers in front and dressmakers in the rear, and there was a little house beside it where either Emily or Louie or both lived. Anyone by chance remember this store or the lady/ies who ran it? Many thanks Sharon Australia
