Whilst things are a little quiet will post this again....................if anyone is on the Lake District list or the Sussex List.......................please feel free to pass this message on..................would love to re-unite them Hi List I have just bought some photographs, not sure where they belong really, BUT if any of you come across a Rev. Douglas EDWARDS, Dr TAYLOR, Miss BECK, Mr HORNS, taken near Bera Tarn...these must belong to some-one. Mention of the HOWARD family including Marjorie HOWARD, H.J. HOWARD & Ruby and I think Rosemary CANTLEY age 4, John CANTLEY age 7. They are really lovely, in black and white, but so much family history in them, including Kim the dog. Some taken at Felpham (which I believe is in Sussex) and more taken at Troutbeck, and Thirlmere, in the Lake District. I know this is a long shot, but if anyone knows any of these names, give me a shout..........could be local famies, but could be much further afield. You would probably be better off at Leeds for Horsforth. Try and visit them both if you have the time - Leeds and Bradford are only about 10 miles apart and there are fast road, rail and bus links between the two cities. However, the parish registers of both Guiseley and Horsforth, if that is what you mean, are at the West Yorkshire Archives Service at Sheepscar, Leeds (not the Central Library). Horsforth was a chapelry of Guiseley. This > new version contains the following enhancements: > > * More Names. More names have been added to the index. These names wer e > received since the last release in January 2000.> I BELIEVE it's worth pointing out rather firmly that, as I understand it, the additional names that have been added to the IGI are largely comprised of submitted information from LDS members and others. I don't know what other listers have found, but I've discovered that some names and events I KNOW were formerly there have disappeared! I've been told the LDS's ultimate intention is gradually to transfer the "proper" records - i.e. the officially extracted ones from parish registers and BTs etc - to CD, as on the Second Edition of the British Isles Vital Records Index, which contains over twice as many entries now as the first edition. Eventually, I gather, the IGI will consist largely of private patron submissions, which means of course that its value as a research tool is going to diminish fairly swiftly if this happens, since as a matter of course I never give any credence to any event submitted by another party without the original source being cited. No disrespect intended to LDS members, most of whom I am sure do their best to get it right, but the plain fact is there are some dreadful howlers in the IGI, as in those utterly worthless "birth about..." entries, which are arrived at by the simple guesswork process of deducting 25 years from a marriage date in the case of a male and 21 years in the case of a female. It really is time these were removed altogether from the IGI. Newcomers to genealogy may perhaps wonder how you tell which entries are official, extracted ones and which are member patron submissions? Easy - just look at the batch numbers. All batch numbers beginning with C, J or K indicate baptisms from a parish register or bishop's transcripts; M or E = marriages from a PR or BTs; P could contain either event from a printed register or typed transcript. All other batch numbers - those starting with an A or F or all-numerical ones - are private submissions that should be treated with the greatest caution. And, of course, any entry with the dreaded appendage "Relative" should be ignored totally! I love to > hear about families, even if they aren't mine! > Nice to have you back, your information is always appreciated. > Cindy Brewer Dooley, in Colorado> THANKS for asking, Cindy, it was splendid! There were about 60 of us altogether, mostly from the US (Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky, Georgia, one of the Carolinas - forget which - Florida, Connecticut and Colorado), plus two new Canadian cousins we hadn't met before, with their spouses, from Edmonton, Alberta, and seven of us from the UK, myself, wife and younger son from Hertfordshire, and my cousin Garry Stockdill, wife and two sons from Bradford. We had four Stockdills from Boulder, Colorado, who are not actually related to me, at least as far as I've been able to discover. They stem from the Irish Stockdales/dills. We also had some Stockdills from PA who I have been in touch with for a few years, but despite having traced their ancestry back to Leeds in the 19th C. I have yet to establish a connection with. However, we regard them all as honorary family. We held the reunion - which is named for James Henry Ambler (1855-1923) from Leeds and Fanny Jane Stockdill (1862-1946), a cousin of my grandfather, who married in London in 1885 and migrated to America in 1906/7, founding the US family - at a very nice country resort in rural Pennsylvania. It's called the Allenberry Inn Resort & Playhouse (it has a 400-seat theatre in which we saw a professional production of the musical "Annie") at Boiling Springs PA (near the town of Carlisle in Cumberland County) over a couple of days. I can thoroughly recommend the resort for a reunion or similar event, as it has comfortable lodges, pool, tennis courts, trout fishing and many function rooms, plus the theatre as mentioned. Prior to the reunion we spent a few days in Philadelphia, which we hadn't been to before, It's a very nice city (nowhere near as dreary as W. C. Fields always depicted it!) but I am bound to say that I found it supremely incongruous queueing to see icons of freedom such as Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, and the famous Liberty Bell, and being subjected to airport-style security, X-ray and body searches etc and being hassled and shouted at by security guards who are not always the most sensitive people in the world. Freedom? What is it these days? I was also mildly surprised at having to produce a passport just to purchase rail tickets for a simple 100-mile trip from Philadelphia to Harrisburg by Amtrak. Perhaps they thought I was going to hijack the train! I spoke to several Americans who agreed that official paranoia is now rampant since 9/11. Understandable, perhaps, but a sad comment on the state of the world, all the same. However, it was only a very minor blip. After the reunion, we were transported by some of our US cousins down to Washington, stopping off en route to see the Gettysburg battlefield, which I found overwhelming. I've never seen so many memorials (there are over 1,300) and the actual battle site is considerably larger than I'd imagined. We took the car tour with a CD that guides you round. We had a few days in Washington, including a couple of nights in Alexandria VA - a gem of a place which we discovered on previous visits - and had a day excursion by train to Baltimore. According to my audit log it failed on me (first failure) at 19:32 on Tuesday evening and I performed 5 retries, all failed. I got a "SEA 501 - unable to perform request" three times then an "Administration error - access denied. Please contact your system administrator" twice. To me that looks very like a "server being taken out of service abruptly" problem... eg. it died and fell off the network. So then by Wednesday they were probably running their "backup servers" intermittently whilst trying to get the main web-server back online. Hence the "now you see me, now you don't scenario". OK techy speak over. This was just to be in competition with Roy "Condescending" Stockdill :D Roy just had luck (and I suspect a cached page as his home page so that he could at least "see" the site) on his side and the rest of us didn't...... Like people servers have nervous breakdowns, overload and they die... it happens... but this is only the second time in about 5 years I can remember LDS having this problem so I think we can count ourselves VERY lucky. I wish the kit I worked on was that reliable. (And possibly some of the people too!) Has this subject been done to death yet? Mmm - my lack of technological expertise ;-) Pity I do this computer support as a job - only for the last 27 years though! :D Perhaps I need more practice..... but then again ony 18 more years until I retire. I do remember the last time they "upgraded" the service their servers were up and down like the proverbial for a couple of days so let's hope whatever it was has now been completed and everyone can return to being happy little hunters again. Speaking of which I'm still stuck with Robert FEATHER (b. Haworth circa 1808 lived in New Halifax, Thornton until the 1851 census then lost!) and his wife Betty HOLMES (b. Oxenhope c.1808). Can't work out their predecessors from the 5 christening options and would love to know what happened to their eldest son Abraham FEATHER (last known in the North Beirley Union Workhouse 1881). Any help in this matter would be greeted with a fainting fit and (when I regain conciousness) a large drink of your choice!
