Hi List Wonder if anyone is interested in any of the above streets, where I have today been taking pictures, West Leeds Street, was a much longer street, as was Lustre Street, but some of it still exists, including my GtGrandmother's house Not sure at all about what appears to be a very tiny graveyard, naturally as children, we would spook each other about it..............and run fast when near it. it is a tranquil little place, with a seat.........and swaying polar trees..........which were there when I was little...............hence the name of the other street there Poplar Terrace............. Going into it today and looking at the dozen at the most large needle type memorials and the tablets laid over what appears to be graves...............I think some of it is merely a Memorial Garden. I photographed every one, but many sadly are fading, so will go back and sit and copy them all long hand Many are BRIGG memorials, some WHITELEY In Remembrance of WIlliam BRIGG of Guard House, who died Oct 1st 1860, in the 53rd year of his age In Memory of Paulina BRIGG late of Bradford who died May 186? in the 71st year of her age. I have experienced the same kind of thing when searching the Bradford Burgess Rolls (in effect, they were electoral registers but of people qualified to vote in local elections) in the Barkerend Road area. My ancestors appeared to have moved, since they appear at different numbers in different years, but I gather there was a good deal of renumbering of roads and streets, as new houses were erected and others disappeared. It's possible that some houses were pulled down or that No. 13 was empty when the BRs were drawn up. Hi Howard, I went to the library again this afternoon to try and solve 'The Mystery of Maltby Street'.I decided to use the Burgess Rolls which were a kind of early version of Electoral Registers. They are very much under-used by searchers, but they are very useful for looking for people in the between-census years. There wasn't a B.Roll for 1881,but there was one for 1879-80,and one for 1883-4. In 1879-80 I found the following--- 13,Maltby Street.Occupier-Alice Crabtree. So the David Benson Marr.Cert.WAS correct after all. There WAS a No.13 before 1881. In the 1883-4 B.R there was no trace of No.13 ; in fact, apart from No.4,the lowest number was 15,just as I found on the 1881 census yesterday. Incidentally my disgraceful sense of humour almost got me thrown out of the library !!!! I got a bout of irreverent mirth at finding the following in the Maltby Street area------Dick Lane,Gay Lane and Sodom Lane !!!!!!!!!!! Cheers----------Derek.

Does anyone have access to the 1871 census, I am trying to trace a David Pye born in Norwich but moved to Bradford. He was born 1832 and he married an Isabella Ellis. In 1881 he was living in Bradford, I am trying to establish the time of his move north. Many thanks. Nicky
Greetings Many thanks to Derek and Fred who answered my email as to who David may have been living with at the time of his marriage. A bit of finger trouble on my part accidentally deleted the emails before I had time to thank them both personally , instead of via the list Howard ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a PRIVATE message. Greetings Re my previous email, I should have said that I used the online 1881 census to go on my "walkbout." I am hoping that some one who has the 1881 census on CD will be able to do a search for 13 Maltby St Bradford. Greetings My g grandparents David BENSON and Mary Elizabeth MIDGLEY were married on the 6th February 1881. At the time of their marriage David was living at ( according to the marriage certificate ) 13 Maltby St Bradford. I have wondered who David was living with prior to his marriage. I have just recently found out that he had an uncle living at 54 Maltby St in 1881, so using this address "I went for a walk on the 1881 census, up and down Maltby St." The lowest house number I found on the odd side was number 15. If any one has the 1881 census, I would appreciate it if they could have a look and see if there is such an address as 13 Maltby St Bradford, if there is could they please tell me who is living there. Do you have any idea how vast a county Yorkshire is? The population in 1851 was around two million. And you don't even say whether he was actually living in Yorkshire, only that he was born there. So he could be anywhere in the UK! Second question - do you know how common a surname Thornton is in England and how many miners there probably were called William Thornton in 1851? Mining was a huge industry then. I should explain that, unlike the 1881 and 1901 censuses, there is as yet no national surname index for the 1851. True, it is the best indexed census of all apart from those two, but it has been indexed on a county and localised basis by family history societies and no-one has yet done the entire country. You ask the impossible, I'm afraid, unless you can be more specific. So don't be offended when you don't get many replies.
