What was the 'Million Act'? I note in the archives Roy's piece about new churches being built after the Battle of Waterloo under the Million Act. I've done a 'search' in which I only turned up the following in the 1790's...!!! 'A discourse on the late funds of the Million-Act, Lottery-Act and Bank of England microform : shewing that they are injurious to the nobility and gentry and ruinous to the trade of the nation : together with proposals for the supplying Their Majesties with money on easy terms exempting the nobility, gentry &c. from taxes, enlarging their yearly estates and enriching all the subjects in the kingdom / humbly offered and submitted to the consideration of the Lords spiritual and temporal and Commons in Parliament assembled.... The act also made provision for parishes to be divided into districts in each of which a curate could be appointed. Part of the reasons for this was that the population explosion in cities had overloaded the original parish churches. Regards Richard -- Born in Sheffield, but currently in Nottingham UK. Many thanks Derek. As I previously only knew of John I had no idea of Joseph or Hannahs ages. I hadn't been able to find either of them in the 1881 (and still can't). John married in 1870 and his father is not shown as "deceased" on the marriage certificate so he probably died between 1870 and 1881 Tigger, Warrington -----Original Message----- From: derek deShelfe [mailto:derekdeShelfe1@activemail.co.uk] Sent: 23 August 2003 16:21 To: ENG-YKS-BRADFORD-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ BRAD] 1851 census Shipley,MIDGLEY. Could SKS on the list with access to the 1861 census look to see if they can find the following for me: Edward KING plus his wife Sarah and any children they may have.(In 1863 they were living Junction Bolton, Idle, Bradford) John PATCHETT(maybe PADGETT) and his wife Charlotte. They were the parents of Sarah. Many thanks, Helen Anderson
for Mary Lou and anyone else who read my previous posting. Yes it was great to note even where he drank ale ! I just wish he had sharpened his pencil more often ! Bowling Enumerators notes District 4 1841 "All that part of the Township of Bowling, beginning at the house occupied by Thomas HILL , shopkeeper, and numbered 441 and every house on the east side of Wakefield road down to the Methodist's chapel, then turn on a footpath below the chapel to the left, and there will be found a farm house occupied by Abram HEAD and two cottages which are about 150 yards out of the Turnpike road; return by the same footpath into Wakefield road , turn down Wakefield road ,and take all the houses on the East side to the top of Low Lane and taking all the houses both north and south unto the bottom of the Lane, turn to the new houses then go up to Croft nook houses, turn back up Low Lane into Wakefield road and take the East side as before down to Furnace Lane, turn to the left on the lane and there are five houses upon the Furnace Hill, turn back into Wakefield road and take the East side down to John HARKER's shopkeeper number 592" Not so many names in this one but I get the feeling he was very careful not to miss any. This was June 1841, I wonder if he stopped for a chat with any of these folk.Quite good fun to visualise the day and the 'job satisfaction' this Benjamin FERRAND had . Hope I find my folk soon Valerie N Yorks
