    1. [ BRAD] 1841 Census Allerton,LEACH.
    2. derek deShelfe
    3. Hi Elizabeth, I went to the library this arvo.to look for your Leach family on the 1841 microfilm for Allerton. Problem ! There were a lot of them !! I hardly expected to find William [b.1765] as he would have been c.76.;and I didn't. Problem !! There were several Johns [now there's a novelty !!!],but not one about 25 years old. There were some older & some younger, some with their parents, some with wives/kids etc.If you can give me more info.re possible names of spouses [or is the plural spise ?], and offspring, then I'll give it another go sometime. Success !!!!! I hope.I found a William who was exactly the age you indicated-35 as foliows-------- Bradford Census 1841,Allerton. Moorhouse. [All surnamed LEACH,all born Yorkshire] William, aged 35,Woolcomber. Martha, aged 30 Stephen, aged 8. Betty, aged 6. Joshua, aged 4. Jane, aged 1, ======================================= I just had time to take a quick look at the same family on the 1851 census card index. On that William's wife was 'Margaret' [Maybe I mis-read the 1841 name Martha ; the film was 'grotty'to say the least] There were 2 more kidlets---Mary and Charles. If this IS your family,I'll re-check '41 to verify the name 'Martha/Margaret'; and make a proper transcript of the 1851 entry. Cheers-------Derek.

    3. Hi Stuart, John Dean was also in the Bradford area in 1851 as a child with his parents. The whole family was born in Shelf [not Sheffield],and so was I,a few years later ! Lucy, dau.aged 16,Bonnet and dress maker Alfred, son, aged 13,Worsted piece hooker [Their address this time was---- Chapel Fold,Wyke.] ======================================== The fact that John was still a scholar at 18 is most interesting.I wonder which Grammar School he attended ? A possible could have been Hipperholme [which I attended, but a few years later !!] I didn't have time to see if William and Hannah were in the Bradford area in 1841 so I'll do it next time. Cheers-------Derek.

Many thanks. > Bye Anna Hello Anna The marriage is listed on FreeBMD (http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/) in Marriages Dec 1858 as HOWARD James Depwade 4b 675. If you click on the page number (675) you get a list of the names recorded on that page, which are : Howard James Lighton Caroline Todd John Clearly there is a name missing and not all of this quarter has been transcribed yet. The missing name could indeed be someone called Maria but nobody could possibly find her at the PRO (or at the Family Records Centre or anywhere else) without knowing a surname to look for. You could search the church marriage register from October to December 1858 if you knew which church they were married in, but presumably you don't know this. So I'm afraid that the only way you are likely to find who James HOWARD married is by paying for a marriage certificate. I hope you find these are the people you are looking for. 3. Hi Listers, At first sight this does not look like a Bradford problem, but he has surfaced in my Yorkshire Family and I am trying to find out how and why. If any one is at the PRO. could they look up JAMES HOWARD who's marriage appears in the December records of 1858 marrying in Depwade District of either Suffolk or Norfolk. I need to know who he married. Hopefully it will to a Maria and I can then place him in the tree. Many thanks. 2. Stuart Morgan
    3. I've thanked Derek in private for the work he has done and I'd just like to say it publicly as well. I'm extremely grateful that he went to the trouble of finding my family in the 41, 51 and 61 censuses. He has saved me an awful lot of work. When I posted it was a small hope that a kind soul would find the time to lookup the family in the 1861 Bradford surname index. Derek exceeded my expectations by not only looking for them in the indexes but by searching out the family in the three census and then transcribing the details for me. Thanks you so much Derek. -- Stuart Morgan http://www.tase.co.uk/ List Admin: [MORGAN-UK] [GREENSHIELDS-UK]

    1. [ BRAD] Re: 1841 Census Allerton
    2. G'day all, I would be appreciative if someone who has access to the 1841 Census for Allerton could look up the following for me, please: William LEACH b.c.1761 and his wife Martha William LEACH b. 1806 John LEACH b. 1816 If you look them up and don't find them, please also let me know that, as it will probably mean they were no longer in the land of the living!! Many thanks. Also - my querie re an epidemic in Allerton created some comment! That family actually buried 4 young daughters and 2 adult children and when the Mother died there was only one son alive at Allerton, plus the grandson she'd reared as her own from age 10 when his Mum died. Her other son, a wool sorter, had come to Aus. - and compared with Roy's account, by the time he had established a wool and hide business in rural N.S.W. we can appreciate how glad this couple, who had lived in a back-to-back inChapel Terrace, must have been to have a house block large enough to have a veritable market garden. Letters indicate they kept a cow and chooks (hens) and grew potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, cauliflowers, cabbage, peas, broad beans, melons, pumpkins, asparagus, rhubarb, rock melons, 9 orange and lemon trees and 16 other fruit trees which the kids could pick from their beds on the open verandah! With these they fed a family of 10 (8+2), preserved for the winter in Agee jars, and by greasing the eggs, gave to friends and neighbours, sent cases of produce to extended family by train or with family visitors and then included dressed fowl. During W.W.I they even sent butter by train...! But this family in their early years in Australia had also buried two little ones. Elizabeth Hooper Vic. Aus.

    3. Hi Stuart, Here's the rest of today's findings. Having found your OXLEY family in 1861,I had enough time to see if they were at the same address in 1871. 'Yes' and 'No'! They had moved 2 doors away !!!! Bradford Census 1871,Manningham. 1,Whetley Terrace. [All surnamed OXLEY] Joe,head, marr.aged 47,Steam saw sharpener, born Huddersfield. Isaac, son, aged 15,Joiner,born Bradford. Frederick, son, aged 14,Bobbin taker off, born Bradford. ======================================== Thinking back to the 1861 census & the appearance of Margaret who wasn't on the 1851 census.I wonder if she was staying with relatives in 1851 ? 1. [ BRAD] Phoebe Oxley, and her Family,1861 Census.
    2. derek deShelfe
    3. Hi Stuart, Had a spare hour this afternoon so went to find Phoebe in 1861. Using the street and surname indexes made it easy to locate the family, even though they had moved house. Bradford Census 1861,Manningham 3,Whetley Terrace. [All surnamed OXLEY] Joe,head, marr.aged 38,Sawyer,born Huddersfield. Hannah, wife, aged 42,born Lancashire, Hawkshead. Joseph, son, aged 18,Plumber and Glazier, born Hawkshead. Phebe, dau.aged 16,Worsted spinner, born Hawkshead. Margaret, dau.aged 15,Worsted spinner, born Leeds. Jonathan, son, aged 13,Worsted spinner, born Dewsbury. John B.son, aged 12,Scholar,b.Bradford. Hannah, dau.aged 10,Scholar,b.Bradford. Mary, dau.aged 9,Scholar,born Bradford. William, son, aged 8,Scholar,b.Bradford. Isaac, son, aged 6,Scholar,born Bradford. Frederick, son, aged 4,Scholar,b.Bradford ======================================== I think Joe's wife Hannah must have had an iron constitution to bear 10 children with very little time between each. Equally noteworthy is that none of the 10 died in infancy !!! Cheers------Derek. 'And there's more',as Frank Carson used to say.

    1. [ BRAD] Please help me find Elias Hartley
    2. Hi, I have just re-subscribed to this list hoping SKS will be able to help. Elias HARTLEY was my g.g.grandfather, born Knaresborough 1802, married in Leeds 1823 to Rhoda Swift. They lived in Knaresborough, he was a blacksmith and they had three children: Elizabeth, Thomas and William (my ggf). Rhoda died in 1840 and I can find no further trace of Elias. The 1841 and 1851 Census for Knaresborough show the children with their grandmother. I have combed the 1837 records and can only find listings of an Eli Hartley death i.e. June qtr 1852 Bradford Vol 9b page 72 March qtr 1853 Skipton (no vol or page) June qtr 1853 Keighley, Vol 9a page 143 and three possible marriages i.e. Ely Hartley Dec qtr Halifax 1842 Vol 22 page 140 Ellis Hartley, June qtr 1850 Knaresborough Vol 23 page 384 Ely Hartley, March qtr Stockton 1852 vol 10a page 71 I know he was dead by 1871 Please will someone tell me where I can look to check out these references. Where are the Census Records kept and also where would I find the Parish Records. I live in Cumbria but would be willing to make the trip if I thought I could solve this riddle. He is driving me nuts! Any help would be very much appreciated. Look forward to hearing from you. Ruth
