    1. [ BRAD] Clara .... pronounciation
    2. vgilbert
    3. Having almost mapped out the life of my elusive ancestor Clara Galloway I would like opinions in how the name was likely to have been pronounced . Clara was born 1861 and it seems to be a fairly common name. I have been thinking Clara ,the ar rhyming with star, but have heard someone suggesting Clara with it rhyming with air. It is not important to the genealogy but what would have been more likely in West Yorks in 1860/70 ? Your thoughts on this please,Any grandmothers or Aunts called Clara ? Valerie N Yorks

    3. Meant to add this to my previous message. Your Nellie would most likely be Sarah. The Sarah on the census was Sarah E which could have been Sarah Ellen and many Sarah Ellen's were Nellie. 3. Hello Dennis Here is your family on the 1871 Census for Shipley. RG10 Piece Number 4500 Folio 25 20 Dove Street, Shipley, Yorkshire George Crossland: Head: Mar: 44: Worsted Spinner Overlooker: born Clayton Margaret: Wife: Mar: 44: born Northowram Mary: Daur: 16?: Worsted Weaver: born Clayton Ellis: Son: 14: Worsted Weaver: born Northowram George: Son: 10: Doffer, Spinner's: born Rochdale, Lancashire Sarah E: Daur: 8: Spinner? born Rochdale, Lancashire Benjm: Son: 4: Scholar: born Otley, Yorkshire Edwin: Son: 3: born Otley, Yorkshire Elizabeth: Daur: 1: Saltaire. All the above are CROSSLAND's. The age of Mary is difficult to determine accurately as there is a heavy line through it. The occupation of Sarah E is probably as above because there is a " under Spinner on the line above. Hope this helps you. If you have any queries about the above just ask away. Kind regards Judith Kettlewell ----- Original Message ----- From: Dennis Farmery <dennis@farmery.free-online.co.uk> To: <ENG-YKS-BRADFORD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, September 26, 2003 6:17 PM Subject: [ BRAD] Crossland-Ramsden Family > Hi There, > > Again, many thanks to all who helped on my SMITH family of Bradford - very > much appreciated. 2. Wow! Thanks for all that lot, Derek. Will have some fun today plotting the families' movements around the village - What I can't work out is the street numbering. e.g from my memory of our brief visit Chapel Terrace (the only address we had in those days!) isn't all that long - and I know they were jammed in, but could they really fit 110 houses there??!! Many thanks for all your time and effort, Elizabeth

A date or approximate period would help. Presumably you have seen the term in some context - knowing the context might throw a light on it. Without knowing precisely what you mean, it could mean anything from the old-time music hall to a top West End show like "Cabaret" or "Oklahoma" to a production of Gilbert and Sullivan by the local amateur operatic society! If you have found the term in a census return, then why not tell us the full description and context?
