    2. vgilbert
    3. Subject: re; Clara ; pronounciation Hello everyone who answered my query. Many thanks indeed 10 replies at least. I should have guessed there is no clear answer. Seems to be just in favour of sounding like Claira, as some thought Clara (as in Star) a little more 'classy' Continental or American. Oh dear I really don't know and my book of names doesn't help.! Thanks for all the replies . I've got two anyway so perhaps I should call one each way! Thank you Valerie N Yorks

    1. [ BRAD] Maria HARGREAVES ; the plot thickens !!

    3. Hi Denise, If Maria & her brood was giving you a headache on the 1841 census, just see what 1851 turned up !!!!!!!!! Bradford Census 1851,North Bierley. [Ref.2304 ED 8 Sch.14] 254,New Works,Low Moor. [All surnamed HARGREAVES] Maria, head, widow, aged 52,born North Bierley. Joseph, son, unmar.aged 26,Laabourer,born Parish of Halifax. Esther Hanah,dau.unmar.aged 18,Spinner at Mill, born Parish of Halifax. Mary Ann,dau.unmar.aged 15,Spinner at Mill, born Parish of Halifax. Martin, son, aged 11,Coalminer's boy, born North Bierley. John, son, aged 9,Coalminer's boy, born North Bierley. ======================================== So Maria in her 'widowhood' had 2 sons ! I got the ref.from the 1851 census card index, then went back to the original source and looked at the microfilm. There were no problems with reading any part of the entry----the above is exactly as the enumerator wrote it down. It looks like you'll have to get Martin's marriage cert.to find his father's name [if known !!!!!!] Maria must have been a VERY MERRY WIDOW. Cheers--------Derek Barraclough.

    3. Hi Valerie, I think it's likely to be a class thing. Clara (as in "star") would sound a bit more classy than the other way. Were your family trying to put on airs? The Earl of Harewood, for example, pronounced "Harwood" lives in Harewood House ("hare") in the village of Harewood ("hare"). Best wishes. Tim Pickard Ottawa Canada

    2. Mal Pace
    3. Hi All, just found a notebook from a visit home ten years ago (been packed in a box and hasn't seen the light of day for seven years) in which I copied some M.I.'s at Haworth, as follows: John son of James & Phoebe Murgatroyd of Lane End. 29th December 1829, aged 22. Phoebe wife of James died 30 December 1847 aged 76. James died 20 August 1852, aged 76. Margaret wife of James Murgatroyd of Sutton died 12 April 1837, aged 26. Sarah daughter of Pickles and Sarah Murgatroyd of Lane End died 8 March 1841 aged 1 year. Sarah wife of Pickles died 7 February 1843 aged 25. Pickles died 13 November 1876 aged 62. Roger Murgatroyd of Ovenden died 10 June 1855 aged 37. (There were also two Redmonds buried in the same plot). Isaac son of James and Mary Jowett of Bridgehouse died 23 July 1798. Joseph son of James and Mary died 7 April 1808 aged either 5 or 8 (difficult to read), also John died 21 April 1812 (?) aged 1 year. Mary Jowett died 28 September 1814 aged 38 (?). Mary daughter died 2 April 1819 aged 18 years. James Jowett died 16.6. 18-9 (difficult to read). Hope that is useful to someone.

    3. Hi Magdalen, It is not possible to be certain, because folk were often buried in a family plot, that was near to where they used to live, or buried in a cemetery associated with the church at which they worshipped. However, Ash Grove is very close to the general cemetery at Undercliffe, so that is where I'd start my search, if I were you. Another possibility is Scholemoor. This is the address and phone number for Undercliffe cemetery Undercliffe Cemetery, Undercliffe Lane, Bradford, BD3 0QD, Telephone (01274) 642276 The Undercliffe burial register indexes have been filmed. I'm sure I've looked at them in Bradford Library. Perhaps someone can say if the LDS have filmed them. 3. Hi Valerie, My 4 West Yorkshire grandparents were all born c.1870,and I'm 100% CERTAIN that all 4 would have pronounced Clara with the 'ar' to rhyme with 'air'.In fact as there was a Clara in the family, that's the only pronounciation I ever heard in family circles. Cheers--------Derek.
