I have just received a death certificate, which turns out is not for my relative. If anyone can claim William KING, who died aged 12 on 17 March 1850 at 5 Jolly's Yard, Bradford, I would be happy to send them the certificate. William's father was also William King, a stuff dresser. The informant was Mary Ann King. (The cause of death appears to have been TB, or phthusis.) The 1851 census shows that Mary Ann was young William's sister, and was only 10 when she registered her brother's death. The family members were: William King, b. c. 1807 in Bombay Hannah, b. c. 1811 in Norwich (poss. Hannah GARROD, according to an LDS submission to the IGI) Jane Harriet, b. 3 Feb 1831 in Norwich Amelia Hannah, b. 26 Feb 1833 in Norwich Titus, b. 5 May 1834 in Leeds (bap.1837 in Halifax) William, b. 30 April 1837 in Halifax Mary Ann, b. 1840 in Halifax (bap. 1842) David, b. c. 1845 in Norwich Priscilla, b. c. 1851 in Bradford In 1841, the family were in Halifax; in 1851, Bradford; in 1861 in Heigham, Norfolk (now a suburb of Norwich). It is interesting to note that there is a Chelsea Pensioner named Titus King living in Heigham, Norfolk in 1851. I'm betting he's the father of William senior, and that William was born during Titus's tour of duty in India. If anyone is a member of the Norfolk list, please feel free to forward this. Rob
Hi Folks, If you have long lost relatives in the USA (and only the USA - ie. not Canada), your luck might be in! As a Genuki maintainer, I received a message from Alex Lind, as shown below. As most of you will know that we as Genuki don't have "members", and so I wrote to Alex asking if she would like me to post the message to the Yorkshire lists and she said she would be delighted if I did, so here it is below. She also sent me a "flyer", and I have uploaded this to: http://www.blunham.com/for/Channel4/UKflyer.htm this gives application details etc. Best wishes, and good luck, Colin Hinson In the village of Blunham in Bedfordshire U.K. Webmaster for the Genuki Yorkshire pages: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ Old and Rare Yorkshire Books on searchable CDroms: http://cdroms.blunham.com/ >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >Dear 'Maintainers' >I'm the Associate Producer of a new genealogy documentary series for >Channel 4. For those interested, the U.S. laws are not as strict as England, the census records can be released after 72 years. The census records are available on-line at Ancestry.com from 1790 - 1930 (1790 - 1840 only have the head of house and the number of males and females in the house). I have contacted some second/third cousins because some of the folks on the 1930 census are still alive and are also listed in the phone book (yahoo.com, click on people link). They in turn filled in the details from 1930 to date. Cheers! I have a similar story to tell. I managed to track down living relatives in Rhode Island with the help of the 1930 US census, plus looking up recent obituaries in the Providence Journal, which helpfully gave the names and towns of surviving relatives. I didn't realise that members of my Hird family had moved over here, until I searched on some distinctive family names on Ancestry (Olive, Matilda, Jonas, Benjamin) and found a bunch of them in Providence, which is about 50 miles down the road from where I live! I would like to get the marriage certificate for Charles and Sarah below if somebody could please find a suitable reference for the marriage which I guess probably took place in Shipley or at least in Bradford. If anybody can see both or either of them in the 1851 census (probably Shipley I suppose) that might be enough information for Bradford Registration Office to isolate the details fairly easily. Thanks in advance, Norman G. 1861 census, 13 Marshall Terr., Leeds, Yorkshire; Charles BELL, head, mar, 29, engine fitter, b. Bradford, Yorkshire; Sarah M. BELL, wife, mar, 30, b. Shipley, Yorkshire;
Norman; Hello Norman; FreeBMD has a marriage registered for Charles Ward BELL in Bradford June 1853 VOL 9B page 209. Page 209 shows the possible bridge as either Sarah HARGREAVES or Sarah WAITE. The second groom has not been entered yet. Sarah would have been born about 1831. Both names show up at that time and later census records do not show Charles living with an in-law so you will have to get the marriage cert to find out which Sarah. I hope this helps. Hi Lou, Here's your homework for the Easter holiday.. I have a couple of ancestors from Yorkshire who seemed to end their retirement days in Southport, (Lancashire). I found this... Both the Victoria Baths and Victoria Hotel opened in 1842.The owner "spared no expense in rendering this house fit for the accommodation of the wealthy and noble families who at that time began to resort to Southport". The south and centre blocks, completed in 1865, considerably extended the Hotel. It was taken over by the Civil service during the Second World War and was not used again as a Hotel before its demolition in 1971. The Victoria Baths Company replaced their original structure in 1871 and Southport Corporation bought the building in 1919, having leased it from 1910. Southport baths has been open since the mid 80's on the closure of the old Victorian Baths close to Southport Pier on the Promenade and there is a rootsweb list for Southport if you fancy joining that one too. I don't know if there's anything useful here .. http://www.sefton.gov.uk/pdf/NEW%20%20Lord%20st.pdf and there's an interesting 'real life' story here with descriptions of the baths. http://www.surnames.com/documented_websites/arminta/heber_robert_mcbride_fifth_child.htm Sue > On the front cover is a picture of "Victoria Hotel and Baths, Southport" > > I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this place....I am just > curious. > On the front cover is a picture of "Victoria Hotel and Baths, Southport" > > I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this place....I am just > curious.
This is a message which has been posted to Keighley Local History Society on their message boards..........I sincerely hope this finds the family of this man F/Sgt Harry DAWSON, killed in RAF 1945 Matt Poole F/Sgt Harry DAWSON, killed in RAF 1945 I am writing on behalf of the Canadian Directorate of History and Heritage, National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa. Canada is currently planning a ground search in Burma for the remains of an RAF 4-engine Liberator bomber crew which was shot down at low level on 3 January 1945 while attacking a target along the notorious Burma-Siam Death Railway, built by POW and native slave labour at a terrible human cost. All 11 crewmen died, including the flight engineer, 33 year old F/Sgt Harry DAWSON of Keighley. It is my desire to find Harry's kin, in order to share details with them, should they desire such information. Harry, whose RAF service number was 1541705, was the "son of William and Mary Rebecca Dawson; husband of Margery Dawson, of KEIGHLEY." This quoted info comes from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, but I cannot be sure if only Harry's widow was from Keighley or if his parents were also residents of Keighley. I will assume that they all lived in Keighley. Eventually we hope to obtain more information from the RAF, such as last-known addresses, but for now the above basics are all I have to offer. I would be indebted to anyone who can establish such a link for me. Because 6 of the 11 aboard the bomber were Canadians, the Canadian government has recently embraced the opportunity to search for the remains after learning that a photo of the crew's original gravesite in the village of Anankwin, Burma was taken in September 1945 by a member of an Allied grave search team. I was able to positively correlate the loss of Harry Dawson's crew to this particular burial based on the detailed caption accompanying the photo. There is no doubt. Sadly, for unknown reasons, the bodies were never moved to a war cemetery, and the airmen's families were not even told of the original gravesite! The 11 men are officially listed as "missing, no known graves". It is this terrible oversight that we hope to rectify. Although I am an American, I am acting as chief researcher for the Canadians on this project, due to my expertise into RAF Liberator operations in the Far East. I have already found the kin of 5 of the 6 Canadians, but I need all the help I can get in locating Harry Dawson's family (as well as the kin of 4 other Englishmen). Canada has committed considerable resources to searching for the airmen's graves in Anankwin, with the goal of finally honoring these men with a full military burial in a hallowed war cemetery. This will not be an easy task, and no guarantees can be given. Diplomatic negotiations with the Burmese government have been initiated. I would be honored to share my information with the Dawson kin, including the 1945 grave photo taken in Burma. (This photo shows the Allied search team in prayer at the gravesite of the KH214 crew.) And from that point onward, the Dawson family could be kept apprised of the current investigation, via myself and/or Major McKillip. I have a long history of treating such kin of air casualties with the utmost respect and sensitivity. My own mother, from Liverpool, lost her first husband in an RAF Liberator shot down and killed with his crew over Rangoon, Burma, and I have researched this mystery and several other RAF Liberator crashes/missing airmen with great success. I only share details with those kin who wish to know more; I do not force information upon them, other than the most basic of details, such as presented here. I absolutely understand that some kin do not wish to face the demons of the past once again. My name and contact information: Matt Poole 12307 Middle Road Wheaton, MD 20906 USA Tel: 301-933-1727 (talk loudly to leave an answering machine message) E-mail: feb2944 AT aol.com (replace the "AT" with the "@" symbol). Wouldn't it be wonderful if Harry Dawson and his crewmates can soon receive the proper burial they have been denied for over 61 years? To reach the Dawson kin, however, I most certainly need help. Perhaps a Keighley-area historian can use his or her talents to find the Dawson kin? I would be most grateful for any assistance. Dear Folks, I have just spent the afternoon going through some things, with my siblings, in my mother's home. One of the things I was fortunate to bring home was a small picture album. Some of the pictures are identified, some aren't. Inside it has a plate with "W.H. Ledgard Artiste Photographer Minature Portrait Painter 11 & 13 Lumb Lane Westgate Bradford" On the front cover is a picture of "Victoria Hotel and Baths, Southport" I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this place....I am just curious. I am thrilled to have this, as it does have pictures of some Allertons, Reffelts and Mary Elizabeth Hanson Allerton at age 17 and Amy and Charlie Sykes (not sure if they are related). Would love to hear from anyone regarding this treasure. Best to all, Mary Louise (Lou) Guerin Toms searching for Allertons, Hansons and Holts andrelated lines of Wigglesworth, Reffelt and Scripture
