Thank you Denise I will try Halifax list. Not one I have been on before but now found a few new names round there.Thankfully not just a SUTCLIFFE. Although I think LISTER may be tricky too! Valerie
As many of you will know looking for a SUTCLIFFE is like looking for a needle in a haystack. So I am very happy to say I may have found mine. John Sutcliffe who married Charity Galloway gave his birth place as Mountain in the 1871 census. He was living in Drighlington. I have had help searching for his family in Mountain Queensbury area. John's father was William a coal miner.By chance I came across a family in the 1851census in Ovenden.William HoH and a second son John Sutcliffe of the right age 11 to be mine. I would be glad of geographical as well as genealogical expertise here. William's wife was Betty. If Betty had family she went to at John's birth, might that show as Mountain? I realise I may have to look for his birth certificate, I have not found it yet. There are siblings too so might there be baptism records in Ovenden? The 1851 census says they were all born Ovenden. The marriage of William and Betty (Elizabeth?) was probably before 1837,as first son James was born 1835/6. Is this assuming too much? I hope I am nearer to finding John and family but do not feel sure how to proceed without bying a lot of certificates. If I can pinpoint the birth and parents marriage that would be good. Valerie Is this the right list for this query?
Hello List, I can't seem to find a List for Wakefield?!! In the PRs for Sandal Magna marriages are the parents names on there? If so could someone look for Joseph STRINGER and Jane COCKCROFT 24 May 1825 please. TIA Helen
Hi HELEN The Wakefield list can be found at _www.wakefieldfhs.org.uk_ (http://www.wakefieldfhs.org.uk) Judi

I > am not sure if this information was included at this time.< No, that sort of information was not included at that time. Parish register entries for marriages hardly ever included the names of fathers or parents. If Sarah was from another parish that might have been stated but it's by no means certain. The information given in most parish registers and bishop's transcripts (copies of the registers) was minimal. Hello; I am hoping that SKS could look up a marriage in the Bradford PR for Peter McFarlane and Sarah Ambler on 21 May 1811. I am hoping that it might have the father's name for Sarah and what town she is from. I am not sure if this information was included at this time. Thank you Keith
My grandfather was from Africa and lived in Bradford post world war1 he was a hawker of herbs at the local markets of Bradford. My granmother was english and they lived at eel Square, Leeds rd areas of Bradford. He was called Charles Peters and my grandmother Beatrice Annie (formerly Lynn). I know there were a couple of other coloured families at the time I would love to find anything out abt them or my grandfather as not much was ever known abt him kind regards Caroline
From: "david harden" <[email protected]> > iinfo on 217 horton lane bradford 1934 is the year i am interested in,> 217 Horton Lane was St Luke's Hospital. Half the population of Bradford was born there, including me! It's on my birth certificate. What you must understand is that up to about 1928/9 St Luke's was the former Bradford Union Workhouse until it became a general hospital. In those times the address was still regarded as a stigma, i.e. being born in the workhouse. I've had this discussion on another list and it seems that the address 217 Horton Lane was still being put on birth certificates until the 1960s! Beyond belief, I know, but there it is. Would somebody please oblige me by looking for the Joe below in the 1871 census? (According to my modern Bradford AZ, Idle Road is pretty long, running from Five Lane Ends through Eccleshill to Undercliffe. The map, surprisingly, does not show street numbers, but no doubt number 5 will be at one end or the other.) Thanks in advance, Norman G. 1881 census, 5 Idle Road, Bradford; Joseph SPENCER, Head, M, Male, 49, Bradford, Yorkshire; Chemist & Grocer.
Dear Folks, I just received a copy of the marriage certificate for Alfred Hanson and Elizabeth Holt. I thought they were married and lived in Bradford, but on the certificate it says they resided in Heaton at the time of their marriage and were married in District Church of Shipley on May 2, 1857. I don't have an age for either of them as it says "of full age" rather than a specific age. It lists him as a tailor and I can't read what her profession is. Would SKS please check the 1851 census and give me ages for these people. The heads of household would be Joseph Hanson, a tailor and Abraham Holt, pattern dyer. Any and all information would be very much appreciated. TIA Lou Toms

Hi Everyone Just a reminder that a group of people from Canada, USA, Australia, NZ, Portugal, Germany and the UK with Yorkshire ancestors are getting together in York between July 8-22nd this year. We plan on furthering our research at the many different archive offices, have a few interesting coach side trips, walks around York, behind the scenes visits to Borthwick, as well as researching there. (Borthwick is within walking distance from where we will be staying. People can elect to take part in the Family History Workshop, "Writing your History". This is not a lecture from a speaker, but an actual workshop. You can pick and choose which or any of the events that may interest you. The program is optional. We will have plenty of time to have fun on our own or with others. Check out http://www.yorksgen.com/ and follow the links We are staying in 10 bedroom houses very near York University. Buses nearby go directly into York. The bedrooms are single, being decent in size and are furnished with bed, wardrobe, desk and sink in each room. Shared facilities include a large well equipped kitchen. Often we are so busy that breakfast is the only meal we all seem to eat there. However, preparing all of your meals is also a way to minimize the cost of this get together. We have a laundromat and a store within a couple minutes walk. Heslington Village is a 7-10 minute walk. We often use the Charles X11 as a place for some social gathering. Don't have to be a drinker to enjoy the company there. Some people are coming as couples, but many of them are coming solo. Don't worry if you don't know anyone as the group is a very friendly bunch. We have been offering rooms on a weekly basis from either July 8-15th or July 15th-22nd. Cost of the rental of a single bedroom is only 70 pounds per week. You can't beat those rates. If anyone is interested in any info about this event or would like more info, please contact me offlist. We also have a few rooms that we will offer on a 2 night minimum basis. Maybe you are able to only come for the workshop or maybe you would like to take part in one of our side trips. Take a look at the program on the website mentioned. The cost of a 2 night minimum stay is 15 pounds per room per night or a minimum of 30 pounds per person. This alternative may appeal to people in the UK who cannot spend the full week with us. Please let me know ASAP. If anyone wishes further info, please contact me offlist. Janet Lovegrove
Hi Folks, I am visiting my newly-found second cousin in Dewsbury next week and wondered if there are M.I.s available for Dewsbury cemetery. If so,could SKS look up any STONEBRIDGE inscriptions for me, particularly Martha, died 14.3.1909 and Simeon, 9.10.1915. Thanks, Jill
Would anyone happen to know whether the Keighley FHS transcription for MIs has any record for Benjamin Hird, b. c. 1779, died some time between 1851 and 1858, and his wife Jane Lucia, died 18 Aug 1858? Thanks, Rob (Yorkshireman in exile in Massachusetts)
Sincere thanks to those who replied to my query and the helpful advice given. Special thanks to Vin Madden - that's a great help. Jan in New Zealand
