I'm posting just in case anyone with connections to the same MITCHELL family as mine read this - please get in touch! My grandfather Robert MITCHELL seems to have separated from his family at an early age, so I'd be thrilled if I could find any ancestors of his siblings - all I know about his family is from censuses and research. The family moved down from the Oakworth area in Bingley/Keighley (working in Providence and Vale Mill) to Bradford sometime close to 1860. In particular I'd be thrilled to hear from anyone descended from any of: Jane(y) MITCHELL born 1889 probably in Manningham, Bradford (identified I think wrongly on the 1861 census as Fanny) Florence MITCHELL born 1891 probably in Manningham, Bradford George MITCHELL born 1900 in Listerhills, Bradford My own grandfather was a sibling of the above: Robert MITCHELL born 1898, Bradford Ancestors: James MITCHELL m Martha HAIGH in 1807 in Oakworth/Bingley Children (at least): Mary Ann b 1808, Sarah b abt 1811, John b 1814, Martha b abt 1826, James b 1826, Maria(h) b 1824, Abraham b 1830, Betty b 1828 -> John MITCHELL b 1814 m bef 1837 to Ann MURGATROYD b abt 1816, d before 1850 in Oakworth/Bingley/Keighley Children: Eli b 1837, Hannah b 1839, James b 1842, John b 1844, Martha b 1847 Then m Jemima SERJEANTSON b 1811 (widowed, maiden name CHESTER) Children: Abraham b 1852, Catherine 1855 -> John MITCHELL b 1844 Bingley/Keighley m Jane TARBOTTON(M) Children: Charles b 1867 -> Charles MITCHELL b 1867 m Margeret PETTY b 1866 in Belfast, m in Bradford Children: Jane(y) b 1889, Florence b 1891, Robert b 1898, George b 1900 I'd welcome any even possible connections from anyone to this family, Paul Mitchell
Hello I sure could use some help on this roadblock. I have Ann Tillotson CHESTER daughter of Mary CHESTER (spinster) baptized on January 5, 1821 in the Parish of Keighley. Then when Ann Tillotson CHESTER married William NANSON son of William, tailor, July 23, 1842 in Parish Church of Bradford, Ann gives her fathers name James TILLOTSON, hatter. Ann died in 1860. It looks like Mary CHESTER never married James TILLOTSON. How can I find out more information on Mary CHESTER and James TILLOTSON? Also would love to find anyone researching NANSON's. Thank you, Debbie Massachusetts, USA
Here is the 1841 census entry - indexed as HESLEYTON on Ancestry HO107/1297/2 F51 P25 Whetley Field, Manningham, Bradford, Yorkshire William Heslington, 35, "Ind", Y Elizabeth do, 15, Worsted Shift Weaver, Y Mary do, 13, Worsted Bobbin Winder, Y Jack -----Original Message----- From: Helena Tetley [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 05 July 2006 00:11 To: [email protected] Subject: [ BRAD] Census Look up - Willliam Heslington Would SKS please look in the 1841 and 1851 Censuses for William Heslington who on 1839 was "occupier of Whetley Fold, Manningham". The Whetley may not be right as it is from a death certificate of Mary Tetley to which death he was the informant. It is hard to read. I would like to know any information given on the censuses. He signed by his mark X so I imagine he did not own the land. Mary left a baby who according to the 1861 census was born in Heaton in 1837 and brought up by his uncle William Tetley in Heaton. Here Canada Day is over and half the city is celebrating the Italian win of the soccer. Street parties every where. I have never had so much help before!!!! Thank you all. I now have a possible William Heslington, one Whetley Fold and another in Whetley Field. Both possibilities. The death certificate reads clearly Fold. The date of the certificate reads Thirtieth of October 1839 6 South at Manningham The "South" is not clear and I don't know what it means. If anyone know do let me know. Helena - Canada
Could I ask that people please reply to the list, so that duplication of effort is not made! (I only saw my own reply to Helena's original query, and there have obviously been others). Best wishes to all Janet C >From: "Helena Tetley" <[email protected]> >To: [email protected] >Subject: [ BRAD] Whetley Fold, Manningham - Heslington >Date: Wed, 5 Jul 2006 09:30:15 -0400 > > Many thanks to those who looked up the 1841 and 1851 censuses. Thank you Jack - that is my man I am sure. Again thanks to all the rest of you Kind Souls. Helena -Canada
Many thanks to those who looked up the 1841 and 1851 censuses. None of the ones listed in 1841 seem to be the right person. But it is possible that "William Heslington occupier of Whetley Fold" in the census district of Manningham might be one of those listed in 1851. Is it possible to see who was living at Whetley Fold, or where it was in the district of Manningham in 1841? William could have rented the property and could have moved. Mary Tetley (whose death certificate started this search) was not buried with the rest of her family in the Baptist cemetery in Allerton but her son was brought up by her oldest brother in Heaton. She may have worked for the Heslingtons. She died of TB. All this is guessing the story. I have made printouts of all the materials sent to me to file as I go on searching. So the labour of those who "looked up" was not in vain. Thanks again. Helena - Canada
Good morning Helena You don't give any indication of William's age in your message, but a search of the 1851 Census for William HESLINGTONs born in Yorkshire finds the following:- William Heslington abt 1841 Manningham, Yorkshire, England Son Manningham Yorkshire William Heslington abt 1836 Thornborough, Yorkshire, England Servant Middleton Quernhow Yorkshire William Heslington abt 1811 Thornbrough, Yorkshire, England Son South Otterington Yorkshire William Heslington abt 1809 Sowton, Yorkshire, England Head Topcliffe Yorkshire William Heslington abt 1799 Nosterfield, Yorkshire, England Head West Tanfield Yorkshire William Heslington abt 1831 Kirklington, Yorkshire, England Nephew West Tanfield Yorkshire William Heslington abt 1835 Thornborough, Yorkshire, England Son West Tanfield Yorkshire As you can see, the only one in Manningham is a child (his father is Abraham HESLINGTON) but if you would like details of any of them, or the images sending to your personal email, please leave another message to the list and I would be happy to help. There are only four listed in 1841:- William Heslington abt 1836 Yorkshire, England South Otterington Yorkshire William Heslington abt 1801 Yorkshire, England West Tanfield Yorkshire William Heslington abt 1835 Yorkshire, England West Tanfield Yorkshire Willm Heslington abt 1811 Yorkshire, England South Otterington Yorkshire but once again, if any are of interest to you, please shout! I am having trouble trying to locate my great grandfathers death cert? He was in the first world War and was discharged to pension in 1916, he would have been about 40 at that time. He was living in Bradford at Chelmsford Rd with his wife and family but what I find is strange is that his wife was re-married in 1921 but no death cert for her husband? I wondered if he maybe went back to army but no trace of any death at War? I wondered if anyone can offer any help/advice. Kind regards Caroline
I've found the Red Gin marked on the 1884 Bradford map by Bacon. It's at the junction of Bowling Lane and Baird Street Bradford Stewart
I can recall the pub "The Red Gin" from my earlier years. It was in what was then called Bowling Old Lane, Bowling Lane in the 1800's, but I think the area has been vastly redeveloped and the location would be virtually unrecognisable. I do have an old Ordnance Survey map of the area of 1856 and can pick out to the best of my knowledge where the Red Gin would have been although it's not named on the map. Stewart

Hi Is there anyone, who is researching CRAVEN's in the Bradford, Heaton, Bingley, Baildon areas, who happen to have any connection with a family named CARLING. On various Census returns I find various CRAVEN families with a stray CARLING child living with them. I sent for a Marriage Certificate for a David CRAVEN [who was a cousin of my 3xgr grandmother] and although his surname is given as CRAVEN, his father's name is given as Timothy CARLING. This was in 1857.. Would love to hear from anyone either looking for these families or who might have any ideas. Blessings Judith K

Ah - found Daniel as a son in 1851 - just to pre-empt other useful lookups. Parents Joseph (1790) and Martha (1784). Many thanks. On Sun, 2 Jul 2006, I wrote: > Genius! Genius! Thanks so much - that looks spot on the right family growing up. Alba! How weird. The 1861 census entry is very hard to read, but it really does look a bit like Alba. The 1871 census is odd also - wife and children have numbers 2 to 11 in the right hand margin by their names - with 10 missing. Can't obviously find Daniel in 1841... so far. A clue to his parents would be great. Great hunting there, thank you!
