Hi I wonder if any listers have access to the death registration lists for Rothwell please. I am looking for the reference No. for Benjamin Bastow, whose death I believe was registered at Rothwell somewhere between 1851 and 1861. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I can get hold of this certificate if may just knock down my long standing brick wall! Jan in New Zealand
My earlier enquiry about Sandy Lane/Allerton produced nothing, so can I narrow it down by asking if anyone is knowledgeable about WATMUFFs before about 1930? VMT GJ

Pam.< I have now reconsidered this question and, having looked at the 1881 census entry, I believe there hs been an error! Not exactly uncommon. I now don't think Joseph was from Yorkshire at all. In 1881 Joseph Merredle is in St Pancras, London, aged 29, and, as you say, his birthplace is shown as "Bradford Milton, York", However, did you notice that he had a sister Rebecca, aged 25, born in Bedford? I believe I found Joseph on the 1861 census, aged 9, with his family - the name seems to be spelt MERIDAL - living at MILTON BRYANT in Bedfordshire. Rebecca is there, too, aged 4. What I suspect happened is that when the enumerator in 1881 asked Joseph where he was born he said "Bedford - Milton" and the London enumerator probably misunderstood his accent and heard it as "Bradford", wrongly assuming Joseph meant Bradford in Yorkshire. Milton Bryan, as it seems to be called today, is near Woburn Abbey, so I think you should be looking in Bedfordshire and not Yorkshire! If you can't get the 1861 image from Ancestry or 1837online, I can send it to you. Such errors in census returns are sent to try us! Another problem solved, I think. -- Roy Stockdill Guild of One-Name Studies: www.one-name.org Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." From: "pamela robinson" > HELLO, I am new to the list, and wonder if anyone can help me, I am > looking for the Merredle family, who were living in Bradford Milton, > York. in the 1850's - where is Bradford Milton? Thankyou - > Pam> I think you have completely the wrong list. There are several places in England called Bradford but I cannot find anywhere called Bradford Milton. However, I suspect the place you may be looking for is West Bradford, a village and township in the parish of GREAT MITTON, which is near the town of Clitheroe on the Yorkshire-Lancashire border. It was in the West Riding of Yorkshire for most genealogical purposes but is technically now in Lancashire, following the 1974 local government reorganisation. You will find information about it at the following website... http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Greatmitton/ West Bradford is some 30-40 miles from the major city of Bradford, which this list covers. However, I note that on the 1901 census virtually all of the Merredle entries (and there are only 13 of them) were in the Sheffield area and mostly born there. I couldn't see anyone of the name at all in the 1861 census and only two in 1881. What were the full names of your folks, so I can maybe find them in 1861 if they have been mistranscribed (which with such an unusual name is quite likely)? -- Roy Stockdill Guild of One-Name Studies: www.one-name.org Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." Pam is asking for information about this family. There are no mentions in the censuses until 1881 (6 mentions), 1891 (5 mentions) and 1901 (12 mentions). In addition, there are various entries in the Births, Marriages and Deaths lists. I had a quick look in one Census and, while most of them are in Yorkshire (as opposed to York), the name Milton was mentioned, but not with Bradford or York, but another place in Yorkshire. I might be able to help you further if I can; please ask. Best regards Keith Brook
Sorry. I do not know why you are not getting my messages. Norman G.

Has anybody got any information about either William Matthews or his father John Matthews? Wm was born abt 1842 in Highgate London, was married to Elizabeth Mansell (nee Ward) in 1881 and subsequently moved to the Oakworth area with their children and step-children. I have no information about Wm's siblings and Wm's mother and the only info I have on his father John is from Wm's marriage certificate which describes him as being a Labourer. Thanks in advance. Is there anyone out there who is any way knowledgeable about Sandy Lane/Allerton and their development in the latter half of the 19th century? GJ
Our Willie (born 1866) married our Sarah (my grand-aunt MASON born 1869) in Bradford in 1888. I'd be obliged if anyone can locate the happy couple in the 1891 census, no doubt in Bradford. Thanks in advance, Norman G.

I got some information from them some years ago on my own ancestors who are buried there. Greetings Some of my DENTON ancestors are buried in Undercliffe Cemetery, Bradford. I know this from the family bible. Most seem to be buried between 1867 and 1904 in 'the family vault' with one 'in his own grave' in 1900. Does anyone know how I can find out where these graves are in the cemetery? With thanks for any information John Tillotson
Thanks to the wonders of the Internet I have just 'discovered' 2 relatives who I had lost for 10 years; I have re-located them in the 1861 Census. Richard Womersley, aged 13, and George Womersley, aged 11, both from Calverley, were scholars at "Bramham College and Boarding School for 23 young gentlemen" in Bramham cum Oglethorpe. Does anybody have any information about what sort of College this was? I have found a couple of references using Google (including the snippet that "Bradford FC had been formed in 1863 by former pupils of Bramham College." but I wondered what sort of people could afford to send their children there.
