Hi Sharon Have you tried searching the Catalogue of the National Archives in Kew where lots of old military records are stored? http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp It lists many John WHITAKER and John WHITTAKERs, though I think they are earlier than yours (but may be of interest anyway). There are also downloadable guides to researching your Military Ancestors on that site. Good luck Janet C >From: [email protected] >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: [ENG-YKS-BRADFORD] Military Records for John Whitaker >Date: Thu, 07 Sep 2006 18:21:55 +0000 > >Good day, I have recently discovered that my ancestor, JOHN WHITAKER (b. >1838 in Bradford) served in the military. Sharon, 1837online.com (a pay-per-view site) has military BMD indexes that you can use to order certificates from the UK General Register Office. I have units to spare, so if you can give me more precise birth and marriage dates, I may be able to help you. Hi Harry Not sure if you can purchase the 1901, but it's on Ancestry. I'll attach the image for Ellis Hartley (with wife Elizabeth) to a separate email to your personal address. If anyone is researching the following Mills family, I would love to hear from you. The spelling of George's last name and his place of birth varies from census to census, but I believe his last name was Mills (not Milnes or Millens). 1881 Hunger Hill, Morley, York RG11 4543/88 pg 33 census: Geo H Mills, Head, age 35, b London, Middlesex, coal miner Betty Mills, Wife, age 33, b. Adwalton, York, England, (woolen weaver) Phillis Mills, Daur, age 13, b Adwalton, York, England, (scholar) Eliza Mills, daur, age 10, b Adwalton, York, England, scholar Mary Ann Mills, daur, age 8, b Adwalton, York, England, scholar Martha Jane Mills, daur, age 5, b Adwalton, York, England, scholar Amelia Mills, daur, age 3, b Morley, York, England 1871 Morley census, Civil Parish: Drighlington, Town: Adwalton,County/Island: Yorkshire George H Milnes 26 b. abt 1845 Adwalton, Yorkshire, England Betsy Milnes 23 Philis Milnes 3 Eliza Milnes 2 months Could the 1881 and 1871 George Mills listed above - be the same George Mills listed below in the 1861 and 1851 Drighlington census records??? I think so... Proving it is another matter...especially when he lists his birthplace as London in 1881 and Adwalton in 1871. 1861 Drighlington, Yorkshire census Susannah Ervens (Evans) abt 1817 Northampton, Nottinghamshire, England, Head George H Millens (Mills) abt 1845 Kent, England Son Jane Millens (Mills) abt 1842 Kent, England Daughter 1851 Drighlington, Yorkshire census, William Eving (Evans) abt 1805 Kilsby, Northamptonshire, England, Head Susanna Eving (Evans) abt 1817 Kilsby, Northamptonshire, England, Wife George Henry Mills abt 1845 Tunbridge, England Jane Mills abt 1842 Ashford, Kent, England Sarah Ann Temina Mills abt 1844 Ashford, Kent, England George Mills (listed in 1851 and 1861 Drighlington census records) was the son of Roger Mills and Susannah Talbot. Roger Mills died in a railroad mine accident in Morley in 1846 and his wife, Susannah, re-married to William Evans in 1849. George's sister, Jane Mills, is my great, great grandmother. I would love to hear from anyone who thinks they may be related to the George Mills family from Hunger Hill - or the George Mills family from Drighlington! Best wishes, Sherry Shallenberger (from Pennsylvania)
