    3. Hi Barry There is a Regent St off Leeds Road at Thackley End, and there was a New York not too far away at Rawdon Carrs near Rawdon (New York Lane still exists). Thackley End is about two miles from the centre of Shipley, and could be a possibility. You could try the oldmaps site, which date from the late 19th century and look for New York. I have found the Alan Godfrey map and Regent Street runs south from Saltaire Road, parallel to Thompson Street which used to stretch from Kirkgate to Saltaire Road. It appears that the present easterly end of Wycliff Gardens was, in fact, the northerly end of Regent Street which was a cul-de-sac. In the 1852 map on www.Old-Maps.co.uk there is an area which appears to be named NewYork Delf, to the east of where Regent Street was and around the area now containing the road called Taunt Street. An old book I have on the history of Shipley suggests that New York, which fronted Saltaire Road, was probably named after the quarries at New York Delf . On the ground floors of the two 3 and 4 storey buildings are shop premises apparently fronting the grounds of the Working Men's Club; Ben Dawson's (hairdresser), Dovers herbalists, Lights fish shop and Reddy's confectioners. My late mother has written on this page that New York was next to Regent Street. Google Earth shows that there has been a great deal of what looks like 1960s redevelopment which is interesting as the early maps show a number of quarries around this area. I should be grateful for anything more about the New York Delf and Regent Street areas. Regards, Barry Emmott

    3. Hi Valerie The page link I gave you was a list of the ones they have available on-line at present. In order to obtain the relevant unit, you have to input the reference in the search bit. If you follow the link that I have put in below, I have taken you to the point where all you need to do is click on the add search part of the diary you want and then you can it to the shopping basket. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/search-results.asp?searchType=quicksearch&mediaarray=&first_date=&last_date=&CatID=2&pageCount=15&query=wo+95%2F1809&queryType=1&pageNumber=2&sortSpec=Score+desc Like many of the diaries, due to the intense activity, each diary is listed per month, and that is £3.50 each. September 1916 is the one that is the most relevant to you. However, I should warn you that your relation's name is not likely to be mentioned in this unless he was an officer, or performed some valiant act that would lead to a medal. Anybody in the ordinary ranks that are killed in action are listed by the number that died, so it might read someting like KIA 3OR. If you know his period of service, you may want to download each diary month by month, which could then make it more expensive, depending on his length of service. Sometimes, you can find that there are published regimental histories or individual battalion histories, which help you to know which battles he fought in and where. Some are on CD, others you might find in a second hand or specialised bookshop. At Kew, the service records are listed on microfilm. About a third of those from WW1 survive. To see if there are any papers for him you need to either go yourself, or ask a researcher to go and look him up for you. If they do survive, there can be some very interesting information on his medical history, his conduct, previous addresses prior to joining up, any family, where he enlisted and paticulars such as height, weight, chest measurement, colour of eyes etc. WW1 is a study area all in itself and quite fascinating to those of us who had ancestors out in Flanders or Gallipoli giving their all for their country. Best Wishes Ellen Valerie Gilbert <[email protected]> wrote: Hello Ellen and thanks for your help. I was eventually able to see a mention of the document you mention. How do any of you ever get a document? I realise I am too tired now to struggle more tonight. I got the medal card earlier but more is overwhelming. I am in complete admiration of you for making sense of the mass of info available, but I cannot see how to get what I need for 1914 - 1916. I will have to sleep on it and try tomorrow. 3. The publishers of census CDs, such as S&N (British Data Archive) and Archive CD Books, are concerned that many of the CDs available on eBay are either illegal copies or are being sold in breach of the original licence agreement. If you hope to see a continuing flow of new resources from these publishers and do not wish to harm their businesses, I would urge you to buy their products direct or through legitimate intermediaries such as family history societies. 3. Thank you Charles, I will have a look there too. Having felt like I fell into the deep end I am now beginning to swim.So much to take in. As every link has been helpful I will shortly look for G Father , Lawrence CREEDON who survived WW1 and wrote back to his old school, St Bede's in Bradford of some of his exploits. He was a Dispatch Rider. Through all the horrors he found it exciting too. More for me to discover. 3. Hi Barry, You could try looking on http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ a few road names are marked, you might be lucky. The other option is looking on the 1901 census for the Shipley, if you have an Ancestry subscription you can look at the descriptions of the enumeration districts, when you find the one(s) with Regent St and New York you can get an idea of where they were from the other roads mentioned. I've had a quick look and there are over 20 districts that you would have to check out. Or you could go on the http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ site and check by address (don't think this can be done on Ancestry) and then armed with the district number go back to Ancestry and read the details of the roads covered. I have an A-Z bought about 25 years ago of the area and they are not in that. 3. Barry I confirm the street names you name do not show in the index of the current Philip's street map. During the 1960's when the current market place was created a lot of terrace housing was demolished to create a car park immediately to the SE of the current market square. 3. Yes Keith , In Memory of Sydney TOWN who died 90 years ago today I have checked his Battalion. He was 18490 9th Bn West Yorkshire Regt(Prince of Wales Own) >From recent information I now know it was formed at York on 25th August 1914. Through very helpful information I have discovered that Sydney must have travelled far more than we knew as he was in Balkans in 1915.I find the Battalion numbers very confusing but believe the 9th was 32nd Brigade 11th Division. War diaries are new research for me so I have lots of reading and checking to do. Thank you for your interest Valerie Subject: [ENG-YKS-BRADFORD] War Diaries > Valerie was asking about a battalion of the West Yorkshire Regiment > (Prince > of Wales' Own). 3. I thought perhaps you might be able to throw some light on the 1891 EMMOTTs shown below? The relationships as you will see are all very unclear. Nancy STEAD nee LUMB is my ggg grandmother. 3. Hi Valerie, I would be very pleased to receive the same i nformation IF you find it. My uncle Samuel Cook Tuxford was killed on 1st July 1916, the first day of the Somme, he too was a member of the same regiment. Have you been to Thiepval? I find it the most moving momument. It is now 14 year since I was last there - I went in October 1992 to "tell" uncle Sam that his brother my father had just died. At the time the memorial book for the "T"s which would have included your Gt Uncle was missing. and have often wondered if it has been replaced. 2. Valerie was asking about a battalion of the West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales' Own). Are you sure it was the 9th? There was a 6th Battalion and a second 6th (my father was in that one), but I have no knowledge of a 9th (that is not to say that there wasn't one however). It's not much, but it may help a little. 3. In 1861 Nancy has her widowed daughter Sarah Burton living with her, one of her children age 6 is Tamnar Burton, could this be Tamar Stead the grandaughter, mislabelled as a Stead in 1871. (If you want the image let me know) I can't find a Tamar Stead in 1861 (including trying under James which is a common mistranscription of Tamar), so I wouldn't assume the granddaughters were illegitimate, just orphans of older children. Since Emeline appears consistently as a grandaughter until the last census, I would assume that one was wrong and the enumerator wasn't listening properly, or didn't copy the information down correctly. 3. Hello Ellen and thanks for your help. I was eventually able to see a mention of the document you mention. I cannot see any way of ordering, no prices mentioned nor facility .I just get There are no items in your shopping basket. Without your help I would not have got near as it just went back and forth .
