Hello Jill, It certainly wasn't unknown for abdominal operations to be cerried out in a patient's home as late as the early 1920s. One of my uncles had his appendix removed at his parents' house when he was around 11 (c.1924) - as I learned from my father when I was recovering from a similar operation (in hospital!) at about the same age. My grandparents still lived in the same house, and both Grandad and Dad had no little pleasure in showing me the room - a little box-room over the front door - and telling me what they'd had to do by way of pre-disinfecting etc. Needless to say, this gory-minded little boy thoroughly enjoyed the whole story. My then "baby brother" had an operation on his ear at home in the Spring of 1948 (just before the NHS was instituted) - but as I was away at school at the time I never found out what was involved :-( As for your Elizabeth DAVIS' unfortunate experience, it may well be worthwhile looking at a County Directory or a Voters' Register in case sufficient detail is in either to establish who was resident at 10 The Crescent at the time. (Although for a semi-rural area, neither may give street numbers.) According to her death certificate her husband, who was present at the death lived in Walsall Grove, Hagley but Elizabeth died at 10 The Crescent, Hagley. The cause of death was, "cancer of the cervix of pregnant uterus about 2 years Torro's operation caesarean section, five and a half hours, shock and exhaustion. Certified by C Martin MB". > > As Elizabeth's place of death was not recorded as a hospital, would it have been a private residence, possibly of a relative or even the doctor - was this normal practice? Is anyone familiar with the area and would know where she is likely to have been buried? On the 1891 census the family was living in Lutley Lane in the village of Lutley. Any comments would be appreciated. > > Regards, > > Jill > > > > ==== ENG-WORCESTER Mailing List ==== > FreeREG Project: parish register database > http://freereg.rootsweb.com > > UK Census on-line > http://freecen.rootsweb.com/ > http://www.worcestershiresurnames.co.uk/ > >
