    1. 1870'S CITY DIRECTORIES
    2. My g'grandfather, Alfred Hemming, b. abt. 1827, shows in the 1871 census as a "builder, employing men and having apprentices." However, when one of his children was born in 1874 Alfred is shown as living in New street (a new address, sorry about the pun),in the city of Worcester, and his occupation is given as "publican." I believe a "publican" is a pub owner, but am not sure. Alfred is dead before the next census (of TB in the Powick Asylum, but that's another question entirely). Does SKS have access to any of the city directories for that time period and if so, can you see if Alfred is listed as a builder, or a publican, and, if so, where the pub was and what its name is? TIA
