    3. G'day I am new to this list and was wondering whether anyone can help me ... I am looking for a John HARRIS and Mary HOWSLIP/ HOWSHIP John HARRIS married Mary HOWSHIP/ HOWSLIP. They had one child (that I know about): John jr (~1827-1908), born in Eckington John jr emigrated to Australia .... the above details are from his marriage certificate .... On the marriage record of John HARRIS, his mother’s name looks like HOWSHIP. On the Edwardian Index, it is given as HOWSLIP. Does anyone have links to the above? ... or suggestions about where to start? John and Mary HARRIS appear to be very common names ... can I find out about Registrars of Births anywhere? (John sr.'s profession) Apologies for the limited information, but that is all I have ... it is one of my brick walls .... 3. Hello Graham, You've various avenues here from what's held at Worcester History Centre. Eckington's Parish Records Wills Indexes Censuses 1841-1901 Worcestershire Marriages Index [I don't recognise the 'Edwardian Index'] In passing, John Sr was still alive in 1851, aged 63, still in Eckington (where he said he was born), a widower, Registrar of Births and Deaths and Relieving Officer, and recorded with 3 teenage daughters - [HO107/2045/62/141 Index No 210660]. No likely candidate for John Jr, though - who at ~24 might well already have left for Australia. (Gold Rush??) Can't answer your query about Registrars - but he would only have taken that post (at the earliest) in 1837, when Registration was introduced. HTH for starters...
