Yes my Cornelius Dancer had as a servant his niece Parthena. I suspect it was quite common. > 4] How far from Dudley would a family travel to work [mines] and did > they travel a great distance in those days They could do while looking for work. Oldswinford is only about 8 miles from Dudley, not far at all really. Actually thinking about it, my Cornelius Dancer was born in Oldswinford in 1827, but married in 1851 at St Thomas's Church in Dudley. There's a Withington in Shropshire, about mid-way between Shrewsbury and Wellington (West Telford), and close to the A5. Not too difficult to travel - even on foot - in the period 1820-50. And Whittington - which is how it appears on the Index/Transcript CD, but as the Transcriber evidently had difficulty with the writing on this page (Sarah DIMMOCK is shown as 'DINMORE?') so Whittington, too, may be wrong - is in Staffordshire, about 3 miles West of the Western edge of Stourbridge. There was an easy Flat Route from Whittington to Netherton along the towpaths of the Staffs & Worcs and then the Stourbridge Canals - although the Direct Route would be shorter... There'd be nothing to prevent them having a relative as a Servant - but are you *sure* of the reading of the surname??? There were mines - coal, ironstone, fireclay - all over Dudley... They almost certainly would've married at St Thomas if it was described as 'Dudley Parish Church' - the other churches in the ttown were no more than 'District Churches' in 1845.
