Hi Listers In my search for Charles William MORRIS, I have found a baptism in the IGI for someone of that name 27 Jan 1839, in Claines. The date fits. He may or may not be my man. Parents William & Jane. Please could someone with access to the 1841 census index for Claines, Worcs see if a two year old Charles William MORRIS is there? (Possibly with a 3 year old brother Michael Joseph MORRIS - though I don't know for sure that these two were brothers). Many thanks again. I hope there is an index for 1841. Best regards, Ruth
Hello Ruth, The 1841 Census of Claines - let alone WOR - has not been indexed. Claines' population in 1841 was 3,546... And assuming that they had 'always' been Watermen/boatmen, then the chances of them having been 'scholars' at the ages of 13 and 14 would seem to be vanishingly-small :-( Do you have any closer date than '1859' for the date of their trial/conviction? It's possible there'd be a report in the local press - but reading an entire year on spec is a major undertaking :-) OTOH, I could certainly look at that baptism in the Claines Register on my next trip to WorcHistCent 'some time' next week, which should give the father's occupation and a probably-vague 'address'. Please let me know if you'd like me to - or if someone else has already offered or done it. Ruth, There is no index for 1841 but I looked for both boys without any success. There are a fair number of MORRIS families but none matched for either boy, though there were a few pages virtually unreadable.
