Hello Listers I subscribed to this list in an attempt to help an American researcher (whom I met on the AUS-CON list) find out more about the convicts Charles & Michael MORRIS who were tried at Worcester. As I live near Kew I offered to look up their trial but yesterday when I checked the convict ship register I found that they were tried at the Worcester Quarter Sessions 17 October 1859. I am unable to help with this as only the Assize records are kept at Kew. I think she will now have to contact the Worcester RO - unless SKS can look this up?? I have been hugely impressed with the helpfulness of the Worcester Listers, so she may strike lucky. Best regards, Ruth
Dear List, This email has just reminded me of one of the skeletons in my tree. It seems my great grandfather William DEELEY (born 24 Oct 1838, Dudley) may well have been in Pentonville Prison at the 1871 census, aged 30. Does anyone have any advice of how I might follow this one up? I was thinking that people convicted of a crime, say in Worcester, would be imprisoned locally. I did find a reference to a William DEELEY on page 97 of "Curiosities of Dudley and the Black Country from 1800 to 1860, CFG Clark (1881)", but haven't been able to see the actual book yet. If anyone is visiting the library (I assume Worcester or Dudley would have copies) please could they have a quick look to see if the reference is relevant to my research. I'd be very grateful indeed. Full story at http://www.schoolmates.org.uk/famhist/deeley.htm for anyone interested. Thanks for that info Mike. I think I've seen something similar before, possibly where I found the index I referred to. I was hoping to see if it was relevant before buying. I looked through the index for page 97 to see if there were any clues:- Benefit Societies Deeley, William Dispensary Election Results - 1844 Friends in Goal Friends' Meeting House Odd Fellows Quakers Rawson, William Widows & Orphans Fund Not much of a pattern there, I'm afraid.
