Hello, I'm a new sibscriber to this list but am a member of several other lists. My husband's ALLENDER ancestors wandered about a lot in the 19th century. They went from Worcs - Glocestershire - Monmouthshire - Shropshire - Aston (Warks) - Sheffield and back to Mon. All of them were forgemen or connected in some way with the iron or steel industry. Several of them married in Kidderminster but had their children baptised in Hartlebury. Can anyone with local knowledge tell me why this may be? I can also find nothing via google about the iron and steel industry in Hartlebury can anyone recommend a book which would enlighten me? Thanks for reading, Gwynne
Hello Gwynne, The likely place was Wilden Ironworks - which is now (I believe) the site of Wilden Industrial Estate on the East side of the River Stour about a mile North-East of the centre of Stouport on Severn. But I know nothing of the works, beyond the fact that there used (*many* years ago) to be an arm off the Staffs & Worcs Canal with a lock that led boats down to the River to serve the works.
