    3. Hello list: I've re-subscribed after a short abcense from the list. I found some additional information on Herbert Taylor MIDDLETON who was born in Saint Martin, Worcestershire in 1829 which would explain why his lt-col father, Charles MIDDLETON, would have been there at the time of Herbert's birth. I understand St Martin is an outlying area of Worcester (the city), and I'm told there is/was a rifle range a couple miles NNW of there. I was also told the Birmingham Canal was completed in 1830, and the army was utilized in helping build the canals. This may be of help to others with military interests in the area. :-) Sharon ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca

    3. Hello again Sharon, I'm sorry to say that the explanations you were given as to why Lt-Col MIDDLETON was in Worcester in 1829-30 don't actually match with what was happeing there at the time... 1) The most likely reason he was living in St Martins was that it contained most of the "best" addresses in or close to the City - although Claines had a couple of 'Good' areas that could be considered 'suitable' for one of his rank and position. The greater part of the area of St Martins was then outside the City Boundary, but the part inside extended to within 100 yards of the City Centre. (The City Boundary was greatly extended in 1835-6.) 2) While I do not know where the rifle range then was, it was almost certainly set up for training the Militia for the Napoleonic Wars - but the Militia had been much run-down in the 15 years that had elapsed since Waterloo in 1815. 3) The Worcester & Birmingham Canal had been opened for its full length in 1815 - and had not been built using the Army. (Although the Army probably was heavily involved in building the Military Canal in Kent/Sussex, which was built during the Napoleonic Wars.) His presence in Worcester at that time still looks to be little more than Chance - or perhaps (distant) Family Connections.
