I have a gg aunt, Matilda ANKER, who was born in 1857 at a place given on her birth certificate as Little Gain near Kidderminster¹. I can find no other reference to Little Gain, and I¹m hoping that someone can help me out on that note. I did find mention of a field-name of Little Gain at <http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=43082>, seemingly associated with the parish of Broom, but I don¹t know whether this is relevant. Broom seems a little far away from Kidderminster to be referred to as near Kidderminster¹. About three years later, in 1860, another child, Willy Joseph ANKER, was born to the same family, with the birth place this time given as Sutton Common, Kidderminster. I don¹t know exactly where Sutton Common is either, but would be interested in knowing where it is in relation to Little Gain if anyone can help. The mother of Matilda and Willy is Sarah ANKER nee WHATTON, said to be born in Kidderminster anywhere between 1826 and 1840, depending on what record is believed. A record of her birth or christening or family is yet to be found, so we¹re hoping that these locations of Little Gain and Sutton Common may lead to that. More detail on this family can be seen at... http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=sknowles&id=I758 Any help appreciated. Regards, Steven
Hello Steven, Kidderminster (Ecclesiastical and Civil) Parish was a great deal larger in area than Kidderminster Borough - but regrettably very very Maps show Parish Boundaries... Plus, over the years since Matilda's birth, Kidderminster Borough has extended quite widely. However, GoogleMaps shows a "Little Gains" that certainly looks to be within the Kidderminster Parish Boundary... Grid ref SO793793 - it's apparently one of the two[?] properties on the East side of the 'yellow' road leading North from Trimpley to Shatterford [on the A442] a little to the South of the turning to the Park Attwood. Can't help on Sutton Common, though - the only hit I get is near Shifnal... On an 1859 town plan of Kidderminster, Sutton Common (my guess is that it was common land) on the SW of the map is shown as being south of Bewdley Hill and west of a road called Sutton Common Road which extended south from the Union Workhouse. There are dwellings shown along this road. I suspect this is now the suburban area bounded by Bewdley Hill, Sutton Rd. to the east, and Sutton Park Rd which joins the two. I do not see Little Gain on the map. Not sure if this is of any help...
