Hi list Has anyone come across the surname Lewin in Worcestershire, I have a Suzannah Lewin from the IGI married to William Watkins, Wolverley 1771, Suzannah was from Bewdley, can anyone shed any light on who she was or her origins. Hi Mark, There's a great likelihood here that at least one of your couple was involved in Inland Navigation, either as Boater or Canal-Builder. Bewdley (a "Chapelry" of the Parish of Ribbesford, despite being a Parliamentary Borough) was a major Port on the River Severn at the time. There was a great influx of Navvies from all over the country. Wolverley is on the Staffs & Worcs Canal (which joins the Severn at Stourport - which rapidly overtook Bewdley as the main local Port) and only a few miles from the river junction. The Canal was started in 1768 at Stourport, and fully opened in 1772, but was well past Wolverley in 1771. And if Susannah's association with Bewdley comes from the Marriage Register, it's no certainty that she'd been born there - merely being "normally resident2 for about a month before the wedding.
