I have a Thomas Bowkett born 1843 in Shelsey. His parents may have been William and Ann but I haven't proved it yet. Please does SKS have the 1851 census for Shelsey so I could see the family at that time, or a record of baptisms for 1843 in Selsey? > many thanks for any help > Wendy > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Hi Wendy, Further on Viv's reply, this looks like Thomas's father William as shown in the census; from the BMSGH parish register transcripts for Martley, baptisms (note that this name has a few variant spellings): 1802 31 Oct William s of John & Mary BOWCOTT This looks like the marriage of John & Mary at Martley (it's the only Bowcott marriage in Martley from 1743 to 1837): 1791 3 Apr John BOWCOT & Mary EATON of Shelsley This means these Bowcotts are probably rellies of mine, as my ancestors include Eatons of Martley (also ag labs at this time) and I know they had connections in Shelsley. However I don't yet know where this Mary of Shelsley fits in. BTW I think when the PRs say Shelsley they usually mean Shelsley Beauchamp rather than Shelsley Walsh or Shelsley Kings. These are all the Martley baptisms for John & Mary: 1792 29 Jul Ann d of John & Mary BOWCOTT 1794 18 May Sarah d of John & Mary BOWCOTT 1796 8 May Ann d of John & Mary BOWCOTT 1799 30 Jun Jas. s of Jno. & Mary BOWCOTT 1802 31 Oct William s of John & Mary BOWCOTT 1806 16 Mar John s of John & Mary BOWCOTT 1809 21 May Mary Maria d of John & Mary BOWCOTT In the burials I could not find the Ann bapt 1792 though the first one below is a possible (though unlikely) mistranscription of Ann as Wm. The 2nd looks like the Sarah bapt 1794. 1793 21 Feb Wm. BOWCOTT 1818 17 Jun Sarah BOUCOTT (24) Finally there are 2 burials that look like John & Mary: 1827 1 Jul John BOWCUTT (63) 1828 27 May Mary BOWCUTT (63) There are only 3 other BOWCOTT baptisms apart from this family; and a few earlier burials; but no obvious connections to the John & Mary family at Martley. My transcripts end at 1838 and none of William & Ann's children are there. However if you look in the IGI (batch C132682) you'll see that though the children are listed in the census as born Martley, they were in fact baptised at Shelsley Beauchamp. There's also a William bapt 1826 who may or may not belong.
