    3. Was there any history of a military presence locally? Although this does look rather small. Around here (next to Aldershot) "The Camp" would mean where troops had been stationed. Viv from Gus: And "The Camp" at Cotheridge in 1841 is shown as comprising 3 "inhabited houses", and the inhabitants whose occupations are shown were Ag Lab, Carpenter and Pauper - which at least gives the impression of being some sort of permanent settlement.

    3. Hi Viv, > Was there any history of a military presence locally? Although this does look rather small. Not to my knowledge - either Ancient or Modern... Nothing on the OS Roman Britain, and while there just *may* have been overnight bivouacs there in any or all of the various Barons Wars, Wars of the Roses, or Civil War. Later than that, about the only likely Military Activity would be the 18C County Militia - although again the (still only presumed) location seems most improbable. It's possible that the Victoria County History may have the answer. Nominally available OnLine at < http://www.british-history.ac.uk/ > this somewhat compex site is acting-up again this morning, and while I can reach the Index giving Cotheridge, trying to open it freezes my computer! [You need to scroll down to see the results of every selection - it looks as if nothing's happened - but this should get you there...] [Home Page] - By Region - Midlands Victoria County History - Worcestershire Volume 4 Cotheridge and you (should) get a digitised version of the Original. > Around here (next to Aldershot) "The Camp" would mean where troops had been stationed. Around here, too - although the bulk were built in WW2, and have largely disappeared by now Gus from Gus: And "The Camp" at Cotheridge in 1841 is shown as comprising 3 "inhabited houses", and the inhabitants whose occupations are shown were Ag Lab, Carpenter and Pauper - which at least gives the impression of being some sort of permanent settlement.
