Is anyone very clever and could they hep me break down a brickwall.my ancestor John Briscoe married Elizabeth Piper in1810 at Martley.according to the register he came from Great Shelsey.however I can find no trace of his birth! There were a family of Briscoe's living in Eldersfield ( which moves counties frequently). Can anyone find his birth for me.I strongly suspect that his ggrandfather may be the one who lived at Eldersfield, but I'm having a real problem finding him.Suggestions Please. Hello Barbara, There are two possible causes for trouble and confusion here... 1) Marriages from 1754 merely required the Parish where either party was resident at the time of the marriage - and that need be little more than a month. It isn't the Parish where they were born - or where they had Settlement (although it is of course possible). 2) Great Shelsley is the old name of Shelsley Beauchamp. I assume from your having quoted a year of birth for him that you have found him either in the 1841 Census or a burials register - but ages given in these are by no means guaranteed to be accurate... And Eldersfield has always been in Worcestershire.... It gained a bit from GLS in 1931, and in 1965 exchanged various parts with GLS. Barbara When the Register states " of Great Shelsey " it means that was where John was living , at the time of their marriage, it does mean he was born there ! I have checked some records I own for that area - ( Gt and Little Witley and Holt) and found - Burials at St Mary's & All Angels Great Witley . BRISCOE John 4 Sep 1817 aged 40yrs of Gt. Shelsey Also Briscoe Elizabeth of Gt Witley 29 June 1827 aged 43 years >From IGI John and Elizabeth appear to have had a son John, Baptised at Shelsey Beauchamp 18 Sept. 1815. The above doesn't assist you in locating John's Birth Location . I note besides Eldersfield, there are also Briscoe's in Strensham.
