    1. [WOR] Hubert FENN, tailor of Worcester

    3. Does anyone have any information on the possible descendants or family of HUBERT FENN, born circa 1864 at Staplow, near Ledbury, Herefordshire, who in the 1911 census was a tailor at 21 Bridge Street, Worcester? He was recorded there with wife Eliza, to whom he had been married for 8 years, with a son Reginald Arthur Fenn, born 1899 in Worcester. I am really much more interested in his daughter, Lilian Fenn, born circa 1890 and presumably from an earlier marriage of Hubert's. In 1911 she was an actress aged 21, born Worcester and apparently a member of a travelling stage company. She was then boarding at Newport, Shropshire. She gave her address as c/o Dobell's Theatrical Company, Worcester. One Frederic Dobell is also found in the 1911 census at Worcester as an actor/boarder and Google tells me he was a fairly well-known actor in Victorian and Edwardian times who died in 1916. Lilian Emily Fenn married in 1922 at Rhyl, Flintshire, to Wilfred Lawson WORSNOP, actor, and her father is shown on the marriage certificate as Hubert Fenn, tailor. Lilian's husband went on to become WILFRID LAWSON, one of the most outstanding character actors of the British stage, screen and Hollywood. He appeared in 47 films between 1931 and his death in London in 1966. Among his most memorable performances were as Alfred P Doolittle in the film of Shaw's Pygmalion (1938), Laurence Harvey's uncle in Room At The Top (1957) and the decrepit butler Peacock in the hilarious comedy The Wrong Box (1966). Once seen, never forgotten, he was a balding little man with a bulbous nose and a squeaky voice. He was also one of show business's legendary drinkers but an amazing actor. He died at Kensington in 1966 and his wife, Lilian Emily Worsnop, died 10 years later, also at Kensington in 1976. My interest? Wilfred Lawson Worsnop, aka Wilfrid Lawson, actor and film star, was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, in 1900 (I have the birth certificate). I had a great- grandmother from Bradford called Charlotte Worsnop and Wilfred Lawson Worsnop may have been a distant cousin. I run the Worsnop One-Name Study as a member of the Guild of One-Name Studies and I am researching the life and ancestry of Wilfred Lawson Worsnop, alias Wilfrid Lawson. I have traced the FENN family in Herefordshire and Worcestershire, a number of whom seem to have been tailors, but I have totally failed to find Hubert and his family in the 1901 census and I suspect they may somehow have been missed. Can anyone help? 3. My Littlebury's Directory of Worcester (1905) puts Hubert FENN at 40 Broad Street, listed as a tailor. Also in the Directory is a Mrs S S FENN at West View, Henwick Road. The info in this Directory was probably collated 1 or 2 years previously, so it is likely that he was in Worcester in 1901, particularly as his son was born there. I've just had a search of the 1901 and can't find him. But strangely Nos 40,41 & 42 Broad St are missing from the census pages. The Broad St. house/shop Nos. on the census match my Directory. RG13/277 Worcester All Saints Dist. 9 Pages 5/6 On the 1881 census the family are at 27 Loves Lane, Claines, Worcester (Hubert is Herbert) Hope this helps.
