Gloucestershire has a searchable database which tells you which records are available - is there anything similar for Worcestershire? Any advice much appreciated. I am looking to obtain an 1836 Worcester gaol record for George Moorfield, Angela

    3. Hello Angela, AFAIK if he was sentenced at the Assizes you'll be out of luck anywhere, other than to search the local papers for reports. [Berrow's Worcester Journal, or the Worcester Herald.] OTOH, if he was dealt with by the local Quarter Sessions, these have indexed - in manuscript only - available at either the Records Office at County Hall, or the History Centre in the middle of the town. [POSSIBLY both, but I have reservations!] Other problems arise over which Gaol he was in - for there were 2. The City Gaol (fairly near the cathedral, but now long gone) or the County Gaol a little to the North of today's Railway Bridge - and demolished in the 1930s. They held different classes of offender, the City being for minor offences within the boundary. A - very - few "Calendars" of prison inmates are also held at Worcester Records Office.
