    3. Please can anyone assist with my research? I am looking for any information on a William COLWELL of Astley, Worcs (c1783 - 1858) He lived at Glasshampton Lodge, Astley, Worcs. according to the 1841 & 1851 census returns. His occupation was a carpenter. He died on 11 July 1858 & was buried on 15 July 1858 at St. Peters church Astley. Listed as:- William CALDER alias CALDWELL He married Sarah, (born in Abberley c1797) who died at Astley in 1886 having lived at Glasshampton Lodge according to the 1841 to 1881 census returns. Children were listed as:- John CALWELL born c.1830, Joseph CALDER born c.1833, Thomas CALWELL born c.1834, James CALDER born c.1837, Edward COLDER born c.1838 & George COLWELL born c. 1842. All children were born at Astley, Worcs and are listed in the 1841 &/or 1851 census returns. According to the IGI there are only 3 marriages of a William COLWELL & Sarah circa 1810 - 1830. All of them in Gloucestershire. In all cases the birth places are listed as villages in Glos. Nothing in Worcs. I have his death certificate and have made an attempt to search the parish records for St Peters church for marriage/birth info without success. Does anyone have any other suggestions of how to proceed? Regards Dave Potter.

The boundary between the two counties was quite fluid at this time, and you may find they are the right places, in the county which was correct at that time (but not now!). -- Chris Pampling researching: BARRATT, DANCER, FELLOWS, GOODES, HOLDING, ROBINSON, TUCKLEY, WHEWAY, MAHER all in and around Birmingham/Smethwick, 1850 to present day PAMPLING Cambridgeshire - Sheffield, 1800 to present VARNDELL Wokingham - Birmingham, 1800 to present

    3. Hi Dave The first thing that I would do is to order one of the birth certificates of the two children born after the start of Civil Registration (1st Jul 1837). This will then give you the mother's maiden name and then you will at least know when you have found the correct marriage. It may well be one of the three that you have found in GLS, but you have to remember that the IGI is very far from complete There are marriage indexes for both WOR and HEF (another possibility) so you would need to check those too. It's a pity that you are not looking for a marriage of a James & Elizabeth CALDWELL, because I have one of those on my ROWBERRY tree at Bishops Frome HEF in 1831, and I don't know what happened to them afterwards! The two births appear in the GRO index as: 1838 Jun CALLWELL Edward Martley 18 403 1842 Mar CALWELL George Martley 18 441 and you can order then with that information and a credit card payment of £7 from this website: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ HTH Polly ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Potter" <david.potter93@tesco.net> To: <ENG-WORCESTER@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, January 16, 2010 9:29 PM Subject: [WOR] Colwell/Calwell/Calder/Colder/Caldwell Please can anyone assist with my research?
