    3. Hi I am trying to trace by Bird english family relations. In particular, I trying to find out about George Bird and his family. George was born in 1855 in Wolverhampton. He married Elizabeth Poulton (born 3/11/1861 in Birmingham) on 23 August 1883 at Birmingham. George died between 1901-19911. At time of 1911 Census, Elizabeth was residing at 287 Highgate Road Balsall Heath Worcester, together with her 2 children Gertrude born about 1885 and George about 1887. I would like to find out more about this family and any assistance would be greatly appreciated. regards John Bird Melbourne Australia _________________________________________________________________ Looking for a great date? 3. Hello John, On Saturday, shortly after noon UK time, I sent the following Of-List reply on the grounds that it was too detailed for general list interest - but have heard nothing since, beyond your later enquiry to the WAR List. I'm assuming that your InBox is set only to accept mail from known correspondents, and so I'm repeating it here in the hopes it will get through this time. Gus *********************************************** Before starting on look-ups, it'd be a help to know just what you already have found out about the family - to avoid wasting time looking for information you already have :-) I'm having to guess here, but it'd seem you've not found George's birth registration - let alone his death - and have only found his widow and children in the 1911 Census. But I realise I could be wrong, so have only looked for them in the 1891 & 1901 Censuses, and for George's death. FreeBMD indicates that there are no 'plain' George BIRDs born 1853-57 whose deaths were registered in any "likely" district around where Elizabeth was found in 1911 - although any of the following 3 *might* be him: 1901 Jun Q - George Edward, 44 - Solihull 1901 Jun Q - George Henry, 48 - Birmingham 1911 Jun Q - George H, 58 - Birmingham which isn't very much help... But this 1891 Census entry *looks* to be the family, in that a fair number of the details match those you've included - apart from the absence of George Junior. 1891 Census - RG12/2354/116/59 14 Brunswick Road, Balsall Heath, Sparkbrook, Kings Norton, WOR George E BIRD, Head, M, [34?/24?], M, Gas Meter Inspector, STS, Wolverhampton Elizabeth BIRD, Wife, M, [38?/32?], F, -, WAR, Birmingham Gertrude E BIRD, Daur, -, 6, F, Scholar, WOR, Balsall Heath [The ages are difficult to determine, because the Summarising Clerk's 'checking-off' tick obscures them.] BUT.... At this stage there's no certainty that it *is* them - and probably the only way you might be able to *prove* it is by buying Gertrude's Birth Certificate. Her birth was registered - as Gertrude Elizabeth - in 1884 Sep Q, Kings Norton, 6c 411 - and the certificate should give her mother's maiden name and her father's full names. FWIW the birth was registered of a George Henry BIRD in 1887 Dec Q, Kings Norton, 6c 396 - but one wonders where he might be in 1891..... The 1901 Census is far more hopeful, though - other than it would've been far more helpful if they'd been indexed as BIRD rather than BORD.... 1901 Census - RG13/2924/100/174 158 Pershore Road, Sparkhill/Sparkbrook, Yardley, WOR George Edwd BIRD, Head, M, 44, M, Gas Meter Inspector, STS, Wolverhampton Elizabeth BIRD, Wife, M, 42, F, -, WAR, Birmingham Gertrude E BIRD, Dau, U, 16, F, School Teacher, WOR, Balsall Heath George H BIRD, Son, U, 6, M, -, WOR, Balsall Heath Once again George Junior presents a problem, for he *should* have been recorded as 13 or 14, not 6..... Things are not made any better by a George Harold BIRD's birth being registered in 1894 Sep Q, Kings Norton, 6c 378 And a George Edward BIRD's birth was registered in 1856 Sep Q, Wolverhampton, 6b 365 - which would seem to indicate that he's very likely to be the death registered in Solihull District in 1901. [Especially as the 1901 address was within Solihull Registration District.] Finally, some mild geography... Despite both addresses in the Censuses being shown as Worcestershire, they are within 2 miles of Birmingham's City Centre! Balsall Heath was lopped-off Kings Norton and became part of Birmingham in 1894, and the whole of Yardley was swallowed-up by it in 1911. All Parish Registers &c are held in Birmingham, with no present-day connection to WOR.
